Yes alright so S7 has had it's share of issues and probably more to come, but I will give the show props for how it handled episode 3 with Ella and Regina.

It would've been so easy to simply make Regina the bitter protective mother fighting against Ella for Henry. They could've made her angry at Ella and dislike her due to almost taking Henry's heart.

But no.

Instead, we get a mature, calm Regina who acts as a comfort and probably the closest thing Ella has had to a mother in years. She listens, comforts and gives mature wisdom of experience to this young woman she hasn't even known for a day. She gives her a connection to others, telling her self-hatred isn't the answer and moving on and doing something good is, something she spent years trying to accomplish.

We see the development of Regina since S1 and we get a deeper understanding of Ella as a woman who undergos abuse on a daily basis because she blames herself. She stayed because she felt she deserved it and I cannot wait to see her grow to love herself.

Ella is not Emma as some have complained as she blocked herself off not because she feared pain and rejection but because she believed herself not worthy for love. She didn't think that she deserved a loving family.

And I think that Henry/Regina will show her the way to love and happiness, eventually becoming the family she always wanted and giving her a chance at a fresh start.
