Junji Ito made a short synopsis manga for The Lighthouse for its Japanese theatrical run. It’ll be published in theater pamphlets sold at Japanese theaters on July 9, 2021.

A distractingly star-studded A-list cast, fronted by the trio of Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, and John David Washington, fails to save Russell’s extremely scattered post-WWI period drama loosely based on the 1933 Business Plot, a real-life alleged political conspiracy where wealthy bankers tried to overthrow FDR to install their own fascist dictator. It’s a madcap mess of a comedic mystery thriller trying to advocate the power of friendship over naked cynicism but rings hollow.
This is a lot like what I imagine a quirky, wartime-set Wes Anderson-directed ensemble period comedy like The Grand Budapest Hotel or The French Dispatch would be like if another misguided (and less talented) filmmaker tried to make it.
