A drag path and it's all the régionalism from different micro region that I happen to make when I speak my regional language because I didnt learn the language in my family but with all of this teachers from all of this different place, the friends that came from elsewhere, the people i would hear in the street...

And yet for some teacher we should chose and stick to a micro dialect, that's not possible anymore, nobody comes from only one village now, and most of us learn it outside our family, its not even our 1st language... society evolved and as much as I understand that it would be sad if regiolects came to disaper, I prefer to think they're extending, they're sharimed in between more and more people and i think that's beautiful

Article on conversation starters based on geographic regions and how people from different states interpreted, “Where are you from?”  I think typically for some of us in NY, its either ’the city’ then going into specifics of which borough, ’the island’ then going into specific county, ‘upstate’, or some of the counties a little bit outside of Manhattan like Westchester,, Rockland, etc.

How do you pronounce "Appalachia(n)"?

For the record, no pronunciation is "right," whatever that means.  Words are pronounced differently in different places.  I'm just curious to hear how some of you pronounce Appalachia and Appalachian.

I pronounce Appalachia as [æpəˈlætʃə].

I pronounce Appalachian as [æpəˈleɪʃɪ̈n].

For those who can't read IPA, that's roughly "A-puh-lA-chuh" and "A-puh-lay-shin", respectively, with majuscule "A" representing the vowel in Gen. Am. cat.

I think the discrepancy in my two pronunciations is because growing up I sort of always knew the name of the Appalachian Mountains, and I absorbed the pronunciation I just described from my parents and/or where I was raised (I can't say for sure how people pronounce it around here - we live in Missouri, so it doesn't exactly come up that often).  However, I didn't know the word Appalachia until relatively late (between the ages of ten and fifteen maybe), and I didn't even know that was one region (debatable but still) or term because it isn't a place name used/talked about/labeled on maps where I am and where I get my dialect from, central Missouri.  So when I first encountered Appalachia, it was from someone who grew up in Appalachia or at least spoke one of the dialects there in which they pronounce it like I transcribed above.  I'm pretty sure at first I tried applying my pronunciation of Appalachian to Appalachia through a sort of backwards formation or obvious etymological connection, but since I'd never heard that place name in my dialect and only in the Appalachian dialect, it sounded strange, so I ended up settling on the Appalachian pronunciation of Appalachia I use now.
