Love these two <3 Now this is one of my favorite arts
Had this as a WIP for a while and figured I’d finish it for today, it’s the closest thing I have to Halloween art this year lol. I made these characters on a whim way back in 2016 so they really don’t have much story to them yet, but they’re really fun to draw so I did some tweaks to their designs anyway. Enjoy! :)
For tordenguden og jættebekæmperens ære
Må vi alle våben bære
In honour of the thunder god and jötun bane
We must all bear weapons
⚔️REIDA - DANHEIM⚔️
Reida by Danheim- this haunts me
Danheim - “Reida/Reiða”
Definitely a song about warriors, their anger or their sacred acts/journey of preparation perhaps?
From my digging around limited sources (that all say slightly different things) I find that “reiða” is Old Norse and also supposed to associate with the meaning “house of the warrior”. The description on this video says their “reiða” represents “anger” and is a combination of “reiða” and “reið”. “Reið” is the letter “r” or rune “ᚱ”. A different source says “reiða” is an infinitive verb (base form) meaning “to carry” (Old Norse). From yet another source “reiða” is like the name “Reiðarr” coming from the name “Hræiðarr” (both Old Norse). “Hræiðarr” is a fusion of other words “hreiðr” (“nest/home”) and “hariaR” (“warrior/leader of an army”). “Hreiðr” is supposed to mean a “bird’s nest”. I couldn’t find much on “hariaR” specifically but it sounds quite like English’s “harrier” meaning a person who “harries” (from “harry”) engages in persistent attacks into a territory. “Einherjar” (Norse mythology) is “ein” or “one” and “herja” is “to lay waste/harry”; an “einherjar” is a solo warrior type worthy of Valhalla, maybe a little off-track but it did come up in this searching for “hariaR” and they seem in the same vein. Returning to “Hræiðarr”, it is a name quite directly supposed to mean “house of the warrior”, the second word “hariaR” replaces indication of a bird’s ownership with that of a warrior’s to the home/nest.
Words around “reiða” that look/seem similar are:
“Reið/ᚱ” which also seems to have meaning of a ride, a chariot/wagon.
“Ræið/Raidō” a ride or journey. (“Ræið” is in the lyrics)
If anyone knows how to further translate any of this (or improve on/correct me) by all means do, because I am at a loss on the rest of this one - very interesting as it has been.
“Det galmer fra nord
over mørkeblå vande.
i mørke aabne dale,
Høres galm og høje Tordenskrald
Mon ej Thor har forladt Asgård
For atter at våge over Midgård.
Med glimt og brag i nattens glød,
glemte vi kulde, blæst og vinternød.
For tordenguden og jættebekæmperens ære
Må vi alle våben bære.
Ankeret løs,
før solen går ned.
Hagall, Maðr, Ár, Ræið
Ís, Sól, Valknutr.”

A very interesting German translation video:
Pardon me not writing in the German lyrics of this second video but they’re on it so you can read and the runes are too!

Huevember Contrast 2019: Day 7 - Reida Yay, more wings! This is Reida, the spirit that lives inside Charla's necklace. An interesting design to interpret into this style, as her initial colour scheme relied entirely on coloured line art to show properly.
