Reposted from @remains2beseen - ❤️ Ghost heart: This decellularized "ghost heart" is a little miracle for organ donation. A pig's heart is placed in a solution which washes away the cells that make up the tissue, leaving just a protein scaffold behind. The scaffold is 'neutral' meaning it won't be rejected by the new host: the person receiving the heart. After being re-filled with stem cells (from the blood or bone marrow of the person to receive it) it's placed into a bioreactor and left to mature into a fully beating heart with the new 'identity'. It can then be transplanted into the recipient as if it was their own organ. Reposted from @remains2beseen - ❤️ Scientists Grow Beating Human Heart From Stem Cells (📸: Bernhard Jank) Researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School have announced that they’ve successfully used adult skin cells to grow functional human heart tissue. Other researchers in the past have managed to grow the tissue, but these scientists have figured out a way to construct the architectural scaffolding upon which hearts can grow. In their previous research with mouse hearts, they pioneered a way to use a detergent to strip a donor organ of anything that may trigger an immune response, before introducing stem cells into the remaining “matrix.” This provides the foundation, or scaffolding, for a newly grown heart. They did the same in this recent study, but with human adult cells instead. After soaking the hearts inside a nutrient-rich solution, they grew the tissue in similar conditions those found in a body. After two weeks, the researchers gave the human heart tissue an electric shock and were delighted to find that it started beating. (How very "Frankenstein"!) The tissue itself looked similar to the way immature hearts are structured naturally. Now, the final goal for these researchers is growing an entire working human heart — but they still have a way to go. Modern medical science hasn’t reached that point just yet. It's December 1st already (how did that happen?!) so it's time for some festive posts...like this gorgeous pimped-up skeleton. I've tried to find the origins of this golden skeleton for a few days and not had much joy. It's been artificially articulated in the same way as real ones and plastic ones are so it's difficult to tell what it's made from. I find this fascinating 💔 @Regrann from @remains2beseen - "Mary Shelley and the Heart of her Beloved Percy": On this day (Feb 1st) in 1851 Mary Shelley, author of 'Frankenstein', passed away. She was 53 years old and died of a suspected brain tumour. I’m featuring her on this instagram because on the first anniversary of her death her family opened her desk and in it they found a peculiar parcel: a page of a poem by her husband, the famous Percy Bysse Shelley, wrapped round a silk package containing some of Percy’s ashes and the remains of his heart. Percy had died in a boating accident around 1822 and was cremated on the beach by 3 male friends for quarantine reasons, so it was theorised that one of the men, Trelawney, must have removed Percy’s heart which was eventually given to Mary who kept it all those years.
