Day 12: Remembering Orlando

Five years ago today, one of the worst hate crimes ever to be committed against LGBTQ+ people happened at an Orlando gay bar named Pulse. An armed shooter walked into the bar and killed 49 people as well as injuring another 58 more. It was Latin night at the club so most of the patrons were also members of the BIPOC community. Today Pulse stands as a memorial ground for all the lives that were lost. Take some time out of your day to remember our fallen brothers, sisters, and enby siblings with me today. Remember Orlando.

Remember Pulse

I remember that morning a year ago, when I checked my phone, still bleary, under the covers. I remember seeing the news and startling awake all too fast. I remember trying to go about my day, seeing the fresh grief on so many faces - but not all.  I remember slowly hearing about the forty-nine lives we lost, learning their names, reading their stories.

A whole year has passed already. These past few days, I’ve seen their names and photographs, over and over again. Beautiful tributes, calls to action, and memorials. Despite the positive messages and the support, my heart is so heavy. Some days I’m just afraid - for myself, and for so many people I love. 

But this community - our community - is a bright spot of hope for me. All of you inspire me to keep striving, keep working, and keep fighting back against hate and fear.

Remember Pulse in Orlando. Remember that it was Latin night in particular. Remember those dear ones we lost, and keep on striving to support all of us who made it to today. Keep working for equal rights, for safety, for inclusion - in whatever ways, big or small, that you can. Know that you are valued. You are seen. You are loved.

I will be at the Orlando Memorial at Stonewall tonight.

Today, we remember those whose lives were taken from them for the crime of love. I have cried so many times today, for the Orlando victims, for queer people who were slain throughout history. We must always remember them and keep them in our hearts, and most importantly, remember that who we are is beautiful and we are stronger than hatred because we have love. Love cannot bring back lives lost, but love will help us remember the 49 and all those before them. We are Orlando.

Love will win. Stay strong everybody. ❤️💛💚💙💜

Day 12, Pulse Club Shooting

TW: Shooting, homophobia, death, murder

On June 12, 2016, the gay nightclub Pulse was shot up by Omar Mateen.

49 people were killed, and around 53 were injured by gunfire. That's over 100 people physically injured that day, not including those who are suffering/have suffered from mental trauma from the night. 49 people with families and dreams were torn from their lives at the hands of Mateen. It's awful.

My heart goes out to those affected by this horrible night, and to their families as well.

The Emotional Moment Drake Bell Decided to Plan Pulse Shooting Benefit Concert in Orlando

Drake Bell also performs an acoustic rendition of his song "Honest" in Studio TooFab after telling us about his personal connection to the Pulse Nightclub shooting.

I knew they weren’t seen together just per pure chance, Drake invited Kira to perform with him:

 "We were just on tour in Florida, and as we were driving back from the airport, we had passed by Pulse," Drake said when he stopped by Studio TooFab this week. "That was such a -- it just hit home when that happened. But I hadn't actually been there and seen it afterwards, so we turned around and we got out and were just looking at everything... And we were just sitting there, and we were like, 'Dude, we should just do something. Like, what can we do? How can we [give back]?”

Drake said he called a few of his friends -- including a band member from We The Kings and singer-songwriter Kira Kosarin from Nickelodeon comedy series "The Thundermans" -- to pitch them his idea of putting on a benefit concert at The Abbey in Orlando, which is located 2 miles from the Pulse Nightclub memorial. Drake told TooFab 100 percent of the concert's proceeds will be given to the onePULSE Foundation. “
