The Stages of Getting Ready for Online Classes
1st day of online classes: *gets up early to get dressed and brush my hair, makes sure to log in to zoom on time*
2nd day of online classes: they cannot see my pants, so I only have to put on a shirt
5th day of online classes: no one can actually tell if my hair is brushed because they only see the front
8th day of online classes: nobody actually cares what shirt I’m wearing, I just have to put a bra under my pajama shirt
12th day of online classes: if I’m late I can just say I had internet problems
16th day of online classes: the ponytail I slept with still kind of looks okay
18th day of online classes: my chest isn’t visible on the camera, I don’t have to put on a bra
Nowth day of online classes: *wakes up when class starts, opens laptop and logs in*
Saw a post about the importance of continuing online or distanced learning for people with physical disabilities and I didn’t want to butt in there and derail things so I’m making a related but separate point here. People with mental health problems should also be granted the same courtesy.
For example, at the university I attend, technically all students are back to on-campus in-person learning. However, provisions have been made for international students who can’t make it back to the country, for immunocompromised people, and for people who still need to quarantine. All courses *have* to have made these arrangements so that people can potentially study remotely. However, nobody else is allowed to make use of them.
Severe agoraphobe? Sorry, no can do. New and unexpected role as someone’s primary carer due to the outfall of Covid? Sorry, no can do. Serious mental health problems which don’t stop someone studying but do mean it is recklessly irresponsible to move them away from their support structure and into an isolating environment that they are not equipped to deal with? Not on the list - can’t be helped.
There is no reason why these problems should be shown less consideration simply because they are not directly and immediately related to the current pandemic. Sure, I guess if you’re just looking to start studying now and you know this is the position you’re in, you should probably check out institutions dedicated to remote studying and so on, if you can. But people who don’t have to use them don’t seem to realise how incredibly limited your options are with those. The Open University, for example, offers a very narrow range of courses. It’s a great option for some people, but it’s not for everyone.
And people whose problems are new, who did a year or two of in-person study prior to the pandemic, should not be forced to drop out now when the resources to help them finish their studies already necessarily exist.
It’s unfair, it’s unjust, and it is - quite frankly - cruel.
This a remainder to check your posture!
Relax your neck and shoulders and move around a bit. Here are some simple exercise moves to get blood flowing in your shoulders:
Changing positions, taking breaks and moving every once in a while are just as important as good postures! Besides sitting on a desk, try studying/working on a sofa or in a standing position, whether on a special standing desk, on a shelf with a good height or idk, an ironing board!
(I wrote and illustrated an article on ergonomics to our guild paper and thought I'd share a short version here, since many students struggle with this. Hope you enjoyed!)
Campus covered in snow and apple rose pastries covered in powdered sugar. Tomorrow I'll be learning some Matlab and trying to get started on my thermodynamics home exam. One of the few pros of remote studying is open-book exams. My googling skills will be put to good use! The exam is the last thing standing between me and my well-deserved holiday break. Yay!
This weekend I'll finally get my student overalls! In my guild, there's a tradition that the overalls are ordered in clean white and dyed with tea to a natural-white colour. Can't wait to finally sew all the patches I've collected so far! They mostly come from events, sponsors, guilds and schools. Btw the lizard meme says "I wonder if I should graduate or enjoy life"
About the Pictures: tried out studying at the lake today! was pretty cool (haha, literally. i forgot to take a jacket and i had to freeze). what’s super cool about my room is that i can basically see the sun shining though my window from my bed in the mornings :)
Monday, 31st August - When you hear the word ‘summer’, what is the first thing that you think of?
warmth and freedom. summer for me is a time without too many responsibilities where you can simply be without school/uni being like “nah, no time to chill you got work to do”
