Label. The. Art. You. Post.
Okay, I need to vent about this quick so sorry in advance. If you don’t feel like reading my rant (understandable), at least read the quotes at the bottom!
1) Going to a museum and taking pictures? Look right next to the work of art you are getting that sick detail of and write down/take a picture of the artist and the name of the work of art.
2) forget to jot down that info (not gonna lie, I do that a lot)? many museums have interactive floor maps or easy to navigate catalogs! Look for it there.
3) Getting a picture of a painting/sculpture from google image/some other site? Literally just copy and paste the artist/title/date. That’s it. Point and click.
1) Would you post an artist’s work of art without credit? I sure hope not.
2) Not to be too salty, but I’m sure these artists put a little too much time and effort into their art for it not to be credited on some aesthetic tumblr. It won’t ruin the aesthetic. Just add the info.
3) You know what really gets me? To a certain extent, I can understand people forgetting to add artist/date/title to their own post. But why does someone take the time to delete someone else’s caption?
Seriously everyone, label the art you post.
Louvre Museum ➳ “Non-commercial re-use is authorized, provided the source and author are acknowledged.“
Some websites have restrictions even for non-commercial uses of their photographs (where do you think those high-quality images you use are coming from?)
National Gallery (Washington) ➳ “Many of the open access images have been digitized with the generous support of the Samuel H. Kress Foundation. The Index of American Design digitization project is funded in part by the Mr. and Mrs. Raymond J. Horowitz Foundation for the Arts.”
Those high-quality pictures aren’t free or easy to make. A lot of money goes into making them accessible. Make sure you acknowledge the generous donors and the museums that make them available for our use!
