Kelly and I went to see Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun’s Unceded Territories show at the UBC Museum of Anthropology, his work is absolutely amazing, huge surreal bright neon satires of colonial occupation, also a virtual reality he created with 90s seeming computer animation earlier in his career, it’s sick
there’s a short loop of him speaking projected above the entrance of the gallery, some of that audio is in the video above, it’s powerful
He demands British Columbia be renamed, and that the province pay back rent on the land it illegally occupies (instead of ever allowing it to be ceded) with the slogans “#RenameBC” and “BC Your Back Rent Is Due”, of which pins and stickers and t-shirts are sold in the Museum of Anthropology gift shop
he’s speaking tomorrow at 7 pm, the museum admission is like $15
Yuxweluptun will also announce the first winner of the #RenameBC contest that aims to revoke the colonial stamp of “British Columbia.”
