  I've not heard of that game before! What's it about?

 Idk if you’ve heard of Choice of Games at all, so if not they basically do a whole lot of Choose Your Own Adventure novels. But as games with stats you can increase and decrease, and you can succeed at stuff or not based on your stats, or your relationships to other characters. And they’re totally text-based so pretty cheap!

Grand Academy in particular though is a really fun story where you’re a student entering a university for villains from all different genres, from chapter one, we have:

The Grand Academy is a genre-bending place. Buildings that don't even belong in the same narrative framework, let alone in the same physical reality, rise around you, and the people that inhabit them are no less diverse. Masked assassins and sharply dressed corporate sharks, bulky barbarians and icily beautiful aristocrats, and here and there a few actual monsters all milling about as the Academy prepares for the school year about to begin.

So there’s some meta stuff where the students want to get their own narratives, and a subset in the faculty who feel anti-heroism is the way to go, and a lot of people talking about how Important and Special a nemesis is.

The writing style is incredibly fun--it’s full of lampshade hanging on villanous cliches, and Genre Savvy is even a stat in the sequel. And the characters are absolutely delightful.

As fun as it is though, a lot of the plot is driven forward by the protagonist’s relationship with their abusive mother, who’s a wonderful villain, and definitely prone to hammy moments, but the game also quietly makes it clear that yeah, she’s legitimately bad for you and it’s more serious than some simple cackling betrayals, and I really love the writing of your relationship.

It’s just. a very good game.

You’ve seen Samodelkina’s 3A attempt in the warmup?

yeah I did see the video. The jump is definitely still short of rotation, but mostly, I’m not convinced by the way she uses her upper body on the axel takeoff? It looks a bit muscled. I really like her, but I’ve noticed some ? things lately, such as her Lutz going flat on 3Lz3Lo combos and I wish they worked on these things right now first. That said, I do think she has the potential to work and perfect the axel.

if someone’s curious, a fan made a series of video comparisons between the program in the summer and through the season.

so, there were two things that I hoped would be back: the exit out of the solo 3A and the high kick out of the 3F. Rika did the exit out of the solo 3A in practice so I hope that one will be back (I really love it ;;), but the 3F exit seems to be gone (I guess she gets better goe with a running edge out of it). 

As for the things they added, I really love the beginning. I feel like it’s smoother, more fluid. The movement is a bit less mechanic and it flows better, even tho it still hits all the accents in the music.

I don’t mind the change of movement at the end of the StSq, tho I’m not sure if I like it more than the old one. One thing I really like is how the worked on the expression. Rika mentioned Tom gave her a series of images to differentiate between the differents mood and parts of the program (like “happy here”, “dark here”) and I think it showed. The beginning is more intense than before imo.

Not to be that person but I still can’t believe Evgenia broke Mao and Yuna’s WRs…………………

In general, I think Evgenia’s scores were definitely inflated, as were Alina’s, but I don’t think they ever won something they shouldn’t have (perhaps besides NHK17, where Polina should have won, imo). Do I think at least the SP WR should have been historical? Yeah probably (also can’t say I’m not mad at the fact that the FP WR should have been Rika’s all season lol) but also food for thought: Evgenia and Alina’s programs were designed to milk the IJS. They lacked in quality on some elements and I think there scores did not reflect the quality of the elements in some ways, but their programs were designed to tick the bullets and hide the weaknesses. 

Eteri understanding and exploiting (not meant in a negative way) the system also changed ladies’ skating. There’s a middle level between empty programs and overly busy ones, and I do think several ladies in this field are finding it and I can’t hide I like ladies’ skating as it is right now. Not the scores, but this field is all kinds of amazing. 

That said, can’t tell you her scores were ok, because in my opinion they weren’t, but I wanted to give a more complex reply. 

not sure if it’s been asked before but something light: your fave costumes this season?

Mmm. Yuzuru’s Origin costume, Rika’s Beautiful Storm and Mai’s Mission costumes…and Alyona Kanysheva’s FP costume. These are my favorites I’d say.

Also didn’t mind Wakaba’s blue costume for her FP. 

What are your thoughts on Nathan’s FP? I’ve only seen it for US Nats so I know I can’t judge the scoring there. Is he unbeatable like they want me to believe?

No, he’s not unbeatable at all. Clean Yuzuru should still be unbeatable. And tbh if the system was actually used properly even not-so-clean Yuzuru should be. 

As far as his program goes, I don’t have much to say. His last season SP had potential for example, but his programs are just…too empty for me. Especially the FP, both last and this year, because there’s simply too long of a set up into every jump. He’s sacrificing everything that is choreography in order to get the jumps done to me.

Who do you think will make the Russian team for Worlds if that hasn’t been decided versus who should?

who should make the team: Alina, Sofia, Elizaveta

the most likely team: Alina, Sofia, Elizaveta. Does Evgenia have a chance? Probably? But it’s very rare to see rusfed change their team after Russian cup final. Polina had the chance, Yulia as well before and no one ever made it. I think Evgenia will have to be amazing to be considered. 

What’re your thoughts on Tatiana Tarasova?

Very interesting figure, legendary coach and choreographer for sure (and looking at Polina’s FP she hasn’t lost her touch), but I can’t say I like her commentary (the things she says about weight and such are simply gross most of the time) nor her…choices re politcking. I mean, she said Stasya should have won nats? That’s an alarm big enough for me not to trust her lol

Tfw Rika’s technique is so impeccable that not even KK can bitch about it... 😍🤧😭

Too bad Rika has her own crazy youtuber, a JP Mao uber who hates her and posts lies about her underrotating and prerotating every jump .___. sigh impeccable technique, but some crazy ppl nonetheless

yeah like even if it’s the best circle, it’s still a terrible abusive prison because it’s a Circle, bioware just tries so hard to write mage Trevelyan as never having fucking suffered at all and being perfectly okay in Ostwick and the worst they can feel is “well I never personally got abused but it was still hard to trust templars”. But yeah life for at least most Ostwick mages is still going to be terrible because they’re in a circle.

Hello! I am a new Kostornaia fan, and I was wondering, why doesn’t she do a -3Lo combo? All the other Eteri girls have one, even Alina who struggles with URs...

Alyona tried a -3Lo combo at the end of last season and it was a nice attempt as far as i remember, so I don’t really know why she hasn’t tried it, my only guesses are that 1) lutz is her least friendly jump (it’s still very consistent, but she has a slight inside edge, it’s probably her “worst” jump) 2) she doesn’t need it in the SP, because she can make up for the difference in BV with GOE there 3) I think Alyona has grown some, so maybe it gave her some trouble?

I would be curious to see her do a 3F3Lo, but I also want her to clean up her air position first :) her takeoff is so high, but she could make the most of it if she was a bit tighter in the air. Actually with the height she gets I think a 4T would not be far fetched with less of a leg wrap :)

Please recommend any twitters, tumblrs, curiouscats, etc. to follow that are fans of Rika (that is, if you know any). I’ve been so spoiled as a Yuzu fan that I didn’t realize how sad and hard it was to get more on skaters that are not mega popular.

Because I’m already worrying about the following season, after Alena, Sasha, and Anya turn senior, does Eteri have other girls to take their place in the junior circuit? I know we can’t make predictions about fs, especially ladies, but I’m really worried about how the Japanese ladies will fare with eteri’s juniors coming up at the same time 😱😱😱

1) I think Anya may stay junior one more season, seeing how she’s missed a full season and still struggles from time to time

2) lol Russian juniors are endless anon, there’s Valieva, Usacheva and a couple of Panovers coming up :) Valieva and Usacheva don’t have a quad as far as I know, but I think they’re training 3A. 

3) making predictions now is useless, who would have predicted Rika to be so good for the whole GP season? I think Alyona’s in the middle of puberty, while with Sasha I can’t really tell how her quads will be/how puberty will treat her, so I can’t really say much.

As for the JP ladies, i hope Kaori can start training 3A again, but idk, she put it aside for now. Rika aside, I think Kaori has some untapped potential there, we’ll see how it all turns out.

How would you rank the 5 categories of pcs for alena kostornaia? I think maybe ss could go first, but I dont know how to rank the other categories

What kind of hellish question anon DDD: I think CO is her “worse” one (hi, Daniil -.-), for example imho Sasha’s programs are better than hers on that this season (smth you notice on SP especially), but the others…I’d probably put SS first and I think she has amazing PE. She’s super tiny but projects very well, I was shocked when I saw her live :) not a rank, but dslsls let’s pretend it is XD

I realise lotsa rika fans are fanyus, esp in chinese social media (I’m chinese). LOL have they seen their similarities…

So nice to hear she’s getting new fans! But shhh don’t compare her to other skaters unless it fits other people’s agenda, or stans will come for you istg.

it’s the best disaster like they take most of the dialogue straight from the book but so wildly out of the original tone that none of it makes any sense like archer screeching that he’s much more reasonable than the rest of his family when he acts more like a badly programmed robot than an actual person and constantly seems seconds away from evil laughing... it’s the worst show i’ve ever seen i love it
