The old Bedford brick kilns and smokestacks (1893). Steam-driven brick making ended on the site in 1970, manufacturing the town's signature "Sydney Red Brick". Old quarried-out brick pits up to 90 metres deep were used as the city's major domestic waste dump (1948-76). Stinking pits were then covered over and industrial sites cleared, creating the gently rolling hills of Sydney Park; by far the biggest public parkland in the Inner West at 40ha (100 acres). The stacks and kilns (repaired and re-pointed 2017) are all that remain from the era. Brilliant example of inner city regeneration, and an enormously popular open public space. Bounded by Alexandria/St Peters/Erskineville/Newtown.
