As I struggle to breathe...
...i'm trying to think of something positive to write about the haze. let's see. how about this:
"the haze could constitute an exogenous shock to the economy, since the average citizen cannot rationally predict the oncoming haze. Moreover, going by the reactions of citizens, this does truly constitute an external shock. Therefore, in this paper, I employ an event study method in an attempt to estimate the economic impact of air pollution on xyz outcomes"
So what kind of data would I need? stay tune to fine out. (assuming I, you know, still stay interested in this...)
On another line of thought as I was walking home today, I was wondering: wouldn't it be interesting if someone estimated the marginal willingness to pay for preservation of historical or memorable sites? I was walking out of the old Jurong Entertainment Center (aka JEC, now known by its new hipster name, JCube), and I was struck by some mild nostalgia for the old run down mall. One thought led to another, and I was left wondering if people, in the same vein of nostalgia, had decided to keep the general structure of the old JEC, and simply gave it a face lift. Clearly, that would be cost-inefficient financially, but if the nostalgia was sufficient to draw crowds to the mall, would it be worth it? Which of course, led me to the question of estimating the MWTP for historical preservation. What kind of problems would one run into as we proceed down this investigation?
