rethaniel appreciation week >> day three - friction >> It’s possible that Rebecca didn’t think through her decision to move herself into Nathaniel’s office.
“I’ll call you as soon as I have any information, Mrs. Chan,” Nathaniel says, as he holds open the door for his new client.
She pauses in the doorway instead of exiting, though, seizing his hand. “I need to know what happened to my son.”
He nods, trying to maintain his professional cool, but the gesture makes him want to squirm out of his skin, honestly.
That’s probably why the next thing out of his mouth sounds so overblown and grandiose. “Well, you can rest assured that you’ve got the best man on the job, at least.”
She offers up a meager smile before exiting.
Nathaniel heaves a sigh of relief as soon as the door falls closed behind her, taking a second to shake off the intensity of Lourdes’ motherly concern for her son.
Once he feels centered again, he turns his back on the door and grabs an empty file from the bottom drawer of his cabinet before kicking it closed again.
He’s only just sat back down at his desk and hit play on his recording of the Lourdes interview when someone bursts through the door to the office.
“Did you take her case?”
Nathaniel looks up to find a short woman with a wild mop of curls charging at his desk.
He raises his eyebrows. “Can I help you?”
“Did I stutter?” The woman asks. “Did you take her case or not?”
“No comment,” Nathaniel says, turning his gaze to his laptop.
“What? What is this? What are you doing?”
A headache blooms around his left temple. He stands. “You’re a reporter, are you not?”
She blinks up at him, clearly a little unnerved by how much height he has on her.
He grins to himself as he moves around his desk, heading for the coffee maker.
To her credit, she recovers pretty quickly. “What makes you say that?”
Nathaniel shrugs as he loads a new filter into the machine. “You have that irritating yappy-little-dog energy they all have.”
“You need my help more than I thought,” she says. “You’re a terrible detective.”
