The veil between the world of the living and the world of dreams is a fragile one. While most of the living are confined to their own private dreams, dreamers are able to explore, manipulate, and even steal from their dreams. While exploring dreams, a dreamer’s physical body will be in a deep slumber, often difficult to awaken. If a dreamer is injured or killed in their dreams, their physical body will mimic that state. That means dreamers must be very careful not to traverse into nightmares.
In rare cases, dreamers have been known to bring people back from their dreams. These are referred to as doppelgangers. Doppelgangers come into the world with all of the knowledge of a dreamer, at the age the dreamer dreamed them.
Dreamers are human. They have a human lifespan.
Dreamers abilities are genetic. At least one parent must have been a dreamer, whether they were aware of the power or not.
Doppelgangers come into the world at the age their dreamer dreamed them. Once they are in the mortal world, they age normally and have no special abilities. Doppelgangers are immune to human illness, but not injury or death. A doppelganger’s lifespan is tied to their dreamer. When their dreamer dies, they fade back into the world of dreams. A doppelganger will always resemble someone on the living plane, as humans are unable to dream up unique faces.
Dreamers are able to leave their own dreams and enter others. Many dreamers use this to secretly communicate with others. Dreamers are also able to manipulate dreams, conjuring up items and locations as they please. However, this is dependent on the strength of the dream. Often, nightmares are difficult to manipulate due to the stress they put the dreamer under.
Dreamers can also remove objects and, in extremely rare cases, doppelgangers from the dream world. This ability takes an extreme amount of power and practice. Objects from dreams will act as they did in the dream world--meaning that magical items will retain their magic.
Dreamers live their waking hours like any other human. However, they may be known to sleep more often than others, preferring the dream world to their regular life. This could also be the opposite, particularly those plagued by nightmares.
Doppelgangers also live ordinary lives. They are often very dependent on their dreamer, usually posing as a family member, close friend, or even lover.
