Shifters are a human that can transform into a beast. Shifters can only change into one form, which is often handed down hereditarily from their parents. Unlike werewolves, shifters transformations are painless and quick.

Common Shifters

Common forms of shifters are animals that are traditional to their homeland. Therefore, Shifters in Salem are commonly mammals like foxes, bears, otters, and squirrels or birds like eagles, owls, woodpeckers, or grouse.

Physiology

Common shifters are mortal and live a human lifespan.

Children of a shifter will always be a shifter as it is a dominant gene, even if it is only one parent. The animal a shifter takes down is passed down hereditarily. If a shifter has two shifter parents, they have a 50/50 chance of taking on the form of either parent.

Appearance-wise, shifters always somewhat resemble their animal form, whether it be in the colouring of their hair or their eyes, or some other feature.

Abilities

Shifters can change into their animal form whenever they choose. During that time, they possess all the advantages and disadvantages of becoming that animal. They maintain their own thoughts and memories, but cannot speak in their shifter form. Shifters in a pack can communicate telepathically while in their animal forms.

When shifters are injured, weakened, or sick, they automatically transform into their animal form, no matter how inconvenient it may be.

Lifestyle

Shifters enjoy the presence of other shifters, often finding themselves in packs. Some shifters, like aviary-based shifters, prefer the presence of similar shifters (mainly so they can all fly), whilst others are simply happy to have people who understand them no matter what their animal form.
