(TL;DR: 2016 retrospective post)
There's no mincing words about how truly awful 2016 was. I'm pretty sure that's universally agreed upon. Likewise, there's nothing I could say about it that doesn't amount to "fuck 2016" (and I thought 2015 was bad). I had a different eulogy already typed up, but I feared that what I'd written would have given people a bad impression of me as it was fairly personal. So let me try and put it another way.
Throughout this month of December, one of my Facebook friends had been doing a countdown with his personal top songs of 2016. While I wasn't going to do any sort of countdown, I had thought about what my personal top song of 2016 was. It didn't take a whole lot of thought, because it's a song which by and large characterized this year for me: Silverstein's "Je Me Souviens".
I never once doubted that Shane Told is a lyrical genius. The album that "Je Me Souviens" comes from, I Am Alive in Everything I Touch, is a concept album about a musician touring the continental United States and Canada, all the while fighting feelings of loneliness (and yeah, that album came out in 2015, but that's besides the point). The beautiful thing about I Am Alive in Everything I Touch is that you can take any one song off of it out of context and still have something relatable. "Je Me Souviens" is one such example.
"Je Me Souviens" is the second-to-last song on the album. I interpret it in a few different ways: It's a song about coming home, even when you know that the comfort of home is only temporary. It's a song about taking the lessons learned from your hardships and carrying on. It serves as a reminder that when you're alone and on your own, there are always friends and family for you to return home to in your darkest moments. That was a lesson 2016 reminded me of repeatedly, between finishing high school, graduating, working through my first semester of college, and even the stigma surrounding the election. Indeed, as far as dealing with continued depression, I ranked this year as only marginally better than 2015. This was the song that helped me get through most of it.
I saw a lot of people hurt this year, for all different reasons. In lieu of all of this, I tried in vain to tell myself that I was okay, while it seemed like the rest of the world was crumbling around me. And maybe this is a pessimistic viewpoint, but I find it hard to believe that 2017 could be much better. That's why I've set my priorities to surviving the new year, whatever that may entail. I just know that I don't want to see anyone else hurt. And I believe I've grown closer to my friends and family this year than I ever have before. So to my friends, family, and all of my Tumblr followers, I can't stress enough how much I need you guys...
