honestly fuck people who are like “lol what are you gonna do with that major” when someone says that they’re going to study something that doesn’t typically lead to a high-paying career or to globally-useful breakthroughs. like not only is that incredibly rude and disrespectful, but can we please not disvalue doing something for yourself because you enjoy it? sure maybe studying art or literature might not cure cancer or show how the universe works but it makes people happy, and it may not pay well but not everything is about making money. please just get rid of the idea that a major is only valid or useful if it leads to a well-paying job or brings measurable benefits to a large number of people.

Head of Development: so once I was gifted a Thai recipe book by Ken Hom, he's Chinese but the recipes were gorgeous. Thai food is quite similar to Chinese food isn't it?

Me: *where is this going.. *

HoD: I blew my family's mind. I cooked them a beautiful green curry, following the recipe to a tee.

Me: *please stop talking before you say something that will make me want to crawl under this table*

HoD: so how often do you eat western food like this? *points at my fish and chips*

Me: erm at home Chinese food would be staple but western food isn't exactly rare..

HoD: if we flipped my scenario and you were to cook something British at home, what would it be?

Me: *wtf, I don't follow any recipes for food I grew up surrounded by at school and everywhere else. who does this man think I am? does he know how much I want to punch him right now? how is he head of learning and development here? is this considered racist? or just ignorant? or am I over thinking? do I have a right to feel angry right now? why is he still smiling?*

Me: I don't know, we do eat roasts you know..

HoD: *polite laugh* a roast, I see.
