Return to Mercadia - An Outline
Mercadia - 4560 AR - 355 years after the defeat of the Phyrexians.
Mercadia is a plane filled with merchants and craftsmen, shysters and charlatans. Mercadia City sits atop the inverted Mount Mercadia. Time and progress has expanded the city to cover the entire plateau. Due to this, the city's populace expanded upward and the wealthier you are, the higher you live above others.
Time and progress have expanded the lower class population as well; with expansion outward instead of upward. Those with a modest income live better off under the rim of Mount Mercadia, protected by the ancient wall of refuse and debris from above. Those who are poorer live outside the wall under the heat of the sun, exposed to the elements and the occasional elemental.
In this current era, Mercadia City is managed by an actual magistrate, a Human, and her council of three city advisors. The Magistrate is a fair and humble woman who, unfortunately, finds herself going along with or turning a blind eye to some of the city's darker goings-on.
Along with the mercantile industry, Mercadia also finds those darker individuals who work-for-hire - assassins and thieves, pirates and mercenaries. Through the misdeeds of Rishadan pirates, Mercadia has come into conflict with the nation of Samarkeena, a rather large nation with a rather large military. Though the two nations have made an uneasy truce; even the smallest event could place them at each others' throats.
It is not only the people who are at unrest, the plane itself is suffering. Since the destruction of the Phyrexian ship Recreant 350 years prior, the plane's already bent physics gradually became more bent or even broken. Direction has become ever more confusing and, sometimes, totally lost. Sandstorms and Hailstorms are occurring more frequently, with both happening simultaneously at time. The appearance of Cinder Elementals on the outskirts of Mercadia are a precursor to the arrival of the much deadlier Ember Elementals. Even Mercadia City itself is not free from danger as the plateau's edge begins to crumble.
Recently, the young planeswalker Teyo Verada had revisited the plane of Fiora and ran afoul of the the goblin planeswalker named Daretti. In an effort to escape, Teyo planeswalked away to Mercadia, appearing in the Rushwood forest and taken in by the Cho-Arrim. However, Daretti was able to follow the young man there, making the acquaintance of a number of Kyren ready to rebel against the Magistrate and retake authority over Mercadia. Coincidentally, the merfolk planeswalker, Kiora, has also arrived on Mercadia in the now nearly submerged city of Saprazzo.
Between the rising temperatures of the plane and the rising animosity between its peoples, Mercadia is edging ever closer to all out war. And there's an old, yet new enemy waiting in the shadows to take advantage of the tipping point.
