Charlie was grateful that at the very least, they never screamed when their nightmares woke them up. It was usually restricted to just a gasp and jolting upright, they’d only fallen off of Vlad’s couch once so far, and he didn’t even wake up that time.

“Christ...” Charlie grumbled, checking the clock nearby. Three hours. That’s all the sleep they were able to get before another nightmare woke them up, this always happened. Sitting up and rubbing their face a little, Charlie didn’t even realize they could hear the shower going until it shut off...

Get the fuck out of my house you disgusting, ungrateful little slut! Whatever the fuck THIS is, I will not stand for it under my roof! GET OUT! 

Charlie had finally found somewhere safe to ride out the storm, squeezing through a hole in the chain link fence and taking shelter inside the condemned building it surrounded. She couldn’t hear anyone else inside, but these kinds of places always had other homeless people and junkies so she stayed close to the exit. 

All this over a stupid haircut. 

But her mother had to have an opinion about everything didn’t she? Oh she just had to have the last say in anything Charlie ever did, regardless of the fact that Charlie had worked hard doing other people’s homework to pay for it herself. 

You look like a fucking lesbian! Is this how you want me to look to the other families at the church? Like I raised a goddamn faggot? You’re a fucking embarrassment, do you want to look like a boy?!

Oooh that had been the wrong thing to say. Charlie lamented her poor timing as she rubbed the side of her face. It still stung from the surprisingly strong slap across the face her mother had given her for that outburst. Usually her mom held back a little, at first, but this was the final straw it seemed. Everything just escalated from there until...

Those bruises would linger, but at least Charlie could say she finally fought back this time. Maybe if she’d done it sooner things could’ve gone better but..

Wave after wave of heat rose to Charlie’s face, even the cold rain outside couldn’t keep it down. Her throat felt tight and her chest felt heavy and why did it have to be like this? Why did her mother hate her so much? Why did she deserve this? It’s not fair. Its not fair it’s not fairitsnotfairitsnotfairITSNOTFAIR!

She choked it back, Forcing her breathing to come in even. She focused on the sound of rain, pushing back all those ugly thoughts. Pushing the sound of her mother’s voice further and further back, shoving all that heat and rage down down down into the pit of her stomach. It was safe there, she could drown it there. This was a good thing. 

This was a good thing. She was free now. She could leave and go somewhere else and never have to see her mother again. Never have to be afraid, never have to keep secrets. Never have to cover the bruises with long jackets and pretend to be clumsy so people would believe her when she said she ran into a door.

The ball of anger tried to push itself back up but she smothered it. No. No more anger. Not anymore. 

She didn’t have much, but she had one thing that might just make the difference. She had an address, one she’d been hiding with her schoolwork so her mother wouldn’t find it. It had taken awhile to hunt down, but worth the effort. Maybe he would understand, maybe he would help...

It was worth a shot. After all.... What did they have to lose at this point?
