When we added chapter and verse, I think we unwittingly moved away from the message of the Scriptures, to the law of the Scriptures.

Presenting my "Third-Option for Welcoming Gay Christians" at Eastlake Community Church, an evangelical congregation that recently chose to become welcoming.
The Parable of the Good Gaymaritan, Somewhere in Indiana
Jesus was sitting in a cafe somewhere in Indiana, working on a couple of new parables for his Tumblr blog. His fingers flew wondrously across the keyboard, interrupted, on occasion, by a sip or two from his french-roast drip and the occasional nibble on his chocolate brownie.
Through the door walked the local self-proclaimed non-denominational evangelical pastor. Like a bullet on its trajectory, he walked purposefully to Jesus’ table and sat down. Jesus, moderately annoyed by the interruption to his parabalizing, said a gentle hello, knowing that a new test was coming his way.
“Morning, Blog-man!” said the pastor, with a smile, celebrating his clever self. Cutting to the chase, he asked, “So what do I need to do to have eternal life?”
Jesus, without looking up from his computer screen replied, “What is written in the Bible? How do you interpret it?”
The pastor answered, “Love ‘Yahweh’, your God, with all your heart, soul, strength and mind; and, love your neighbor as yourself.”
Continuing to type away, Jesus answered simply, “Yup. Do that and you will live.”
The pastor, a bit annoyed at the lack of Jesus’ clarification, and sure that by neighbor he meant other Church members, asked, “And who is my neighbor?”
Jesus paused for a moment, breathed a small sigh, closed his laptop and took up his cup of coffee for a comforting sip. He thought for a couple of moments, contemplating. After another small sip, he looked up at the pastor and replied:
“A man came walking out of a shopping mall across a dark parking lot to his car. He was carrying a rainbow flag that he bought, which he planned to deface and write anti-gay scripture verses on. As he approached his car he was attacked, robbed, stripped naked and beaten within an inch of his life.
A priest happened to be walking to his car. When he saw the man, fearing the robbers might still be there, he ran to his car and drove off quickly, calling 911 to let them know the man was lying there. A pastor came walking by soon after. Seeing the man lying there covered in blood and holding a rainbow flag, he walked on the other side of the lot to his car, hoping to avoid getting HIV, locked the doors, drove off quickly and called 911, and then his prayer chain, asking them to pray for the guy.
The Emergency Response men came, saw the rainbow flag, and decided not to help the man, for religious reasons, taking the rainbow flag and dumping it in a garbage can nearby.
But then, a gay couple came walking out of the mall. Seeing the man lying there, they were horrified that this could happen to someone and rushed to help him. They bandaged his wounds, using the vodka they had just purchased to disinfect his injuries. They put him in their car, knowing that the blood would never wash out, and took him to the hospital where they refused to treat him. So they took him to a friend’s place who was a doctor and asked him to help him. They gave him $2000 dollars asking him to look after the man, adding, ‘When we return, we will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’”
Jesus finished, asking, “Which of these people do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”
The pastor, disheartened, replied, “The gay couple who cared for him.”
Jesus answered, “Go and do the same.”

Shirley Phelps-Roper Response
It has been almost two weeks since my initial letter to Shirley Phelps-Roper of the Westboro Baptist Church, concerning our invitation for an Over Coffee Conversation. We recently received this note from Shirley:
Open Dialogue With Shirley Phelps-Roper from Westboro Baptist Church
Recently we began conversations with Shirley Phelps-Roper from Westboro Baptist Church (http://www.godhatesfags.com/), regarding the hosting of an Over Coffee Conversation event about gay partnership and conservative faith. Due to the nature of our correspondence, I asked Ms. Phelps-Roper for permission to make our dialogue open to the public. She has kindly agreed. Here is our correspondence so far.

Osteen's Church Responds, Sort-Of (Third Letter)
This is my third letter to Joel Osteen. The first and second have gone without significant reply.
Due to Pastor Joel Osteen's recent shift in message on the gay issue, stating conclusively that he believes "homosexuality is a sin," I felt compelled to communicate with him and urge him to clarify his position.
We have shared this third letter with Pastor Osteen's team and await their reply.
#########
Dear Pastor Osteen,
This is my third open letter. The first and second having gone without significant reply.
Thursday morning we received a brief email from Cassie Malone, Media Relations on your behalf.
