Drugstore Makeup Reviews: Foundation

I generally shy away from drugstore foundation for a few reasons.

1) No testers. That just seems like a giant waste o' time.

2) Soooo many products. I feel like there's a new commercial everyday for a new Revlon or Cover Girl foundation, with everyone from Halle Berry to Ellen to Kate Hudson swearing it's the ONLY thing they'll put on their skin. Until the next commercial break, when there's something else they're slathering on. You get my point.

So when I decided to do a giant drugstore makeup haul, I took the plunge and went all in for foundations. It's also good research for me for my styling clients - often I have clients who need their makeup done for a specific event, and they don't generally wear foundation. So the thought of spending $54 on my all-time FAVE foundation in photos (Chanel Pro Lumiere, now formulated as Perfection Lumiere) for what they think will be a one-time deal is less than appealing.

Tested:

Revlon Colorstay Whipped Creme - I was intrigued by this formulation. Something that's supposed to be light and airy but still provide good coverage. I tried it, and I have no review. Why? Because the color match was so awful I had to get it off my face immediately. The problem with Revlon cosmetics is that cover girl Halle Berry seems to be the only black person they know. So the shades either stop at her shade, or go one shade darker, and that shade is like 30 shades darker.

FAIL.

Next up, Maybelline Fresh Dream BB Cream. I have been dying to find a BB cream in my shade. Dr. Jart, one of the originals is great for Asian gals with medium skin tone. Bobbi Brown, usually known in part for her more true-to-life shade range than most brands, has a BB cream, and it stops at, you guessed it! Halle Berry fair.

More beauty brands are getting in the BB game, since BBs (Beauty Balms) are supposed to combine the light coverage of a tinted moisturizer with real skincare benefits, and therefore eliminate the need for serums and moisturizers before application. In theory.

FAIL. The color came out of the tube grey. That's right, grey. And I'm sure it thinks it's going to magically color adjust or something. Mostly it just left a watery ashy mess on my face. The only reason I tried this one was because it was supposed to have a full shade range. Pah.

Last, but not least, things are finally looking up!

I have been wanting to try an airbrush finish spray foundation ever since watching Carmindy on What Not To Wear use one for years. Dior makes one called Diorskin Airflash that is divine. It also stops at shade...I'm not even going to say it. Anyway, I can't wear it, though I sincerely would like to (hint, Dior, hint. I enjoy your Diorskin Nude Gel-creme and your Diorskin Forever powder compact, which do come in my shade. Can a girl get some Airflash?)

Moving on, Revlon Photoready Airbrush does a great job. The coverage is medium and buildable, and it looks really natural on the skin (a must. As Bobbi Brown says, Skin should look like skin, not like foundation.) I got it in the Caramel shade (which, for the record is about 3 shades deeper in the Whipped Creme Makeup version from Revlon).

It comes out as a foam, like hair mousse. I just put a little in my palms and work it around into a liquid and smooth it on with my fingers. I use my Beauty Blender sponge to give it a more airbrushed finish by diffusing any lines that are left. Love the finish - it's not completely matte, but it's also not so "dewy" that you just look shiny or shimmery. I am a firm believer that dewy is code for, What's up with your skin, and why does it shine on it's own?

There's a liquid in the Photoready line too. Used it on a client and she liked it. We tested that one and one by Cove Girl, and she said the Revlon Photoready liquid felt much lighter on her skin. The coverage was still great though. Her skin tone was evened out, and her freckles were still there, which was awesome.
