Portrait of Alida Christina Assink
Artist: Jan Adam Kruseman (Dutch, 1804-1862)
Date: 1833
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, Netherlands
Description
Alida Assink is depicted from head to toe in her finest attire. This is exceptional, as the painter Kruseman reserved such a full-length portrait only for royal families. Assink was 23 when this portrait of her was painted. Her guardian, a wealthy landowner, had commissioned the work. The rural setting, with a hunting dog and a garden vase, harks back to the English portrait style, which Kruseman admired.
The Grey Craig house, a country hunting estate, was built in 1902 along Philadelphia's Main Line after the plans of architect William Price. 'The interior was strongly English in design and ambience, as exemplified by the hardwood floors, carved oak and chestnut paneling, and granite and limestone fireplaces.'
