"During the fifth eruption at Sundhnúksgígar, last May, I captured this unique, almost hypnotic lava flow. It turns out this was an even more fleeting moment than usual because since then, the area where I recorded this has been buried twice over with new lava. It’s wild to think how much and how fast this area has been terraformed in less than a year. If you would have asked me, or asked anyone really, what they would have expected to happen there I don’t think anyone would’ve guessed we would be experiencing our 7th eruption in less than a year time.

The area at the Sundhnúksgígar eruptions is restricted. As a member of press, I have permission to access it."

An eruption started on the Reykjanes Peninsula in the south of Iceland a moment ago. The eruption is located close to Hagafell and is clearly visible from the settlements around it. The National Police Chief, in consultation with the police chief in Suðurnes, have decided to go to the emergency level of Civil Defense due to the eruption in Reykjanes.
