Friends, I’m super excited and giddy to get the word out about my poetry performance comin up on Tue. November. I have some stuff in the vault that might be ready for sunshine (or moonlight), and I’ve got some recently released poetry collections, so I may share some of those pieces as well. I hope you join me! Spoken Word and Poetry Meet featuring Reza “Rites” Clifton, Tuesday, Nov 1 · 7:30–9:30 PM, hosted by Jaybird Walker at R1 Indoor Karting, 100 Higginson Ave, Lincoln, RI. The night will start with an open mic, followed by me sharing poetry and storytelling from 3 AM IS THE NEW BLACK (@3amblack). I can’t wait! #rezarites #3amblack #ambitiousblackfeminist #3amblackpoetry #vanity4themovement #joyisthemovement #blackgirlmagic #carefreeblackgirl #blackwomenwriters #blackwomenpoets #blackpoets #blackpoetsofinstagram #blackwritersofinstagram #poetry #storytelling https://www.instagram.com/p/CkRetQ4vkH-/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Multimedia Poetry Pieces for Those Who Love Black Girls, Women, Femmes
If you are in the business of caring for Black girls/women/femmes, you might be exhausted. There is the slow tide of justice moving in the Breonna Taylor case. There are all the misogynoiristic bottom-dwellers who emerged to tell Black woman hip hop artist and community activist Noname that she and other intelligent, justice-driven Black women need to be nicer and more accommodating to Black men who’ve never valued intelligent, justice-driven Black women in the first place. And there are the details that have emerged surrounding the tragic last days of activist Toyin Salau. This does not scratch the surface when we think of the continued attacks and murders of our trans sisters, the cultural and physical attacks on our younger sisters who are just trying to graduate high school, and my own biological sister, who is currently suing the ACLU SoCal for racial discrimination. And of course, there are the instances right out of my hometown - like the disrespect, disdain, and downright displays of discrimination recently directed at Providence City Council members Nirva LaFortune and President Sabina Matos. And oh, by the way, there is more.
It is exhausting.
That is why I want to ensure that I make my two most recent multimedia poetry videos and audio links available and easy to access in one place - in case you too are exhausted, and need some poetry and art to help you regroup. The two pieces were inspired by thoughts on community, leadership, joyfulness, Black Love, and resistance, and by the invitation to perform during the June 18, 2020 Campaign Kickoff event for Cynthia Mendes, a woman of Cape Verdean and Puerto Rican heritage who is running for office in the 2020 elections for Senate District 18, East Providence, Riverside, and Pawtucket, RI. rho
I love you/us, and I pledge to continue making art, poetry, and public statements that say so.

It was one of those days
Where fingertips
Tripped on cloth
Knuckles declared war on knots
And fears mingled
With doubts
During simple
Daily exercises
Still
Locs ended up wrapped Tightly
And right
Beseeching life to reflect
The twists and folds
And the fruit trees
And flowers
After thunderstorms
Green with delight
And promise
It was one of those days
Where fingertips
Tripped on cloth
Knuckles declared war on knots
And fears mingled
With doubts
During simple
Daily exercises
Time for the
Rain

Taking a Day Off Or Fuck You Political and Cultural Hegemonists and White Supremacist Fuckheads
By Reza Rites
When you work
So hard
To be
To yell
To exude
I am a woman
I am worthy
I am talented
I am beautiful
I bring value
I bring joy
I bring love
I bring promise
I exist
I reach
I lead
I fall
I hurt
I rebuild
I support
I thrive
You are forced
To take days off
Symptoms of doubt
Desperation
And erasure
Can threaten
To attack
You
And overcome
Your body
And mind
Don't let them in
Yesterday doesn't matter
Ignore those instances in which
We
Yes we marginalized people
Were given preferential treatment
But then suddenly
Surrounded
By violence
Masked as dancing
Hegemonic leanings
Masked as debate
Hostility and aggression
The new old norm
No thought given
To whether
Those up front
Suffer from trauma precipitated by
Forced invisibility
Or physical
Or psychic
Violence
Exacerbated by
The absence of accountability
Empathy or acknowledgment
And the way there is
No way
To tell the difference
Between dance
And interpersonal destruction
Don't let them in
Yesterday doesn't matter
Put aside the night
And day
Full of surprises for many
Though the perplexity
Was perplexing
As the subjects of study
Are people who
Live on your block
Attended your camp
Deposit at your bank
Attend the same barbers
And tattoo spot
Pick up groceries
Buy sneakers and hats
Attended the same schools
Prayed and tithed
Developed and
Found ideologies there
Right
By
Your side
Why are you asking me
Questions
You sound like
Don't let them in
Yesterday doesn't matter
And what of
The other night
Inspired by soul
In a place that looked like
A chemists lab for
Constructing and deconstructing
Dove soap
Even though professionals
Can be hired or played with
And titles can be adjusted
And tweaked
Even though the reference
Doesn't end with the S word
It is also the power
Made famous by afros,
Fists and hair picks
Some of the very staples of
The times and people
You play, mimic and
Borrow from
But don't make room for
Or maybe
They don't come
Or
Maybe
Don't let them in
Yesterday doesn't matter
But I am they
And I want to go home
Because there is
No home
Here
