Okay I know I’m a chapter behind but LOOK at this panel. Look at how this was drawn. Everyone read this in a similar tone, we all know it was a significant moment of Kaneki saying goodbye. Someone reading this literally would think “look at Kaneki's touching goodbye to his wife”. But this is Tokyo Ghoul. If Ishida had meant that sort of moment, why would he blur out everything else but include Hide? Why would he draw a stippled darkness over Touka’s head but lightness over Hide’s? And the expressions on their faces! Hide is so bright and vibrant, reassuringly relaxed. He knows Kaneki can do it, he has trust in him. He cares but he knows Kaneki. But Touka looks so sad and worried. She doesn’t give him credit for being as strong as he is. She doesn’t get it. She doesn’t know what he can handle. It just really gets me that this whole panel was clearly devoted to Touka AND HIDE. Ishida is really layering on this contrast between the two of them and I desperately hope it has meaning.
