Merry Christmas from the stars! This morning there was news of the long awaited successful launch of the James Webb Space Telescope from French Guiana! This is only the beginning of a 1 month journey and 6 month process of preparing the instruments for imaging what will likely be the most mind blowing images of space, from space, EVER. Rho Ophiuchi Cloud Complex. Only gathered 35 minutes worth of exposure before the wispy clouds wrecked havoc so I really had to massage the data and coax the photons in post-processing to display a modicum of what can be revealed in this gorgeous section of sky. 14min wide field of Antares and the Rho Ophiuci Region / La Palma 2018 This is my very first try to photograph a celestial object with a telephoto lens. I had a crush on the Rho Ophiuci Region since I started to photograph the milkyway and nearby constellations. You can easily see the bright yellow star on the left - Antares - the heart of Scorpius (Qalbu l-ʿAqrab) - with a distance of 600 light-years or the Star Cluster M4 - which is approx 7200 light-years away. And of course the colourful dust and nebuleae around makes this region very famous and beautiful. In a few weeks I will return to la Palma and continue to photograph that region to add more exposure time for a better result. That’s the cool thing about deep-sky photography! Rho Ophiuchi Cloud Complex by Martin_Heigan About this image A Camera Lens image of a section of the large Rho Ophiuchi Cloud Complex. Rho Ophiuchi is a dark nebula of gas and dust that is located 1° south of the star ρ Ophiuchi of the constellation Ophiuchus (close to the red Supergiant star Antares). The camera was on my Telescope Mount, with Sidereal Tracking and Autoguiding to counter track Earth's rotation (as I would normally do with my Telescope). About the Interstellar Cloud Colors: Fine dust illuminated from the front by starlight produces blue reflection nebulae. The atoms of gaseous clouds that are excited by ultraviolet starlight produce reddish emission nebulae. Back-lit dust clouds block light and appear dark. Antares (a red super-giant star, and one of the brighter stars in the night sky), lights up the yellow-red dust clouds. Rho Ophiuchi lies at the center of the blue nebula. Interstellar clouds are even more colorful than we can see in visible light, emitting light across a large portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. Ive been spending the day going over old data to see if i can improve upon my previous attempts at editing this. Pretty happy with the progress ive made on this image :)
