A chance combination of the flat heads of the tiny yellow flowers of Foeniculum vulgare 'Purpureum' (bronze fennel) with the bold foliage of Vitis coignetiae (crimson glory vine) were a great contrast with each other and helped by the painted wall. Vitis coignetiae is a very strong-growing, large deciduous climber with tendrils for attachment, whilst Foeniculum is an upright, clump-forming perennial with delicate, fine foliage which is purple when young.

There are more than 3,000 varieties of heirloom or heritage tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) cultivars being grown worldwide and more than 15,000 known varieties. Here are a few cultivars in a small demonstration glasshouse at the Royal Horticultural Society garden at Harlow Carr, UK, reminding me that autumn is here.

Helenium ‘Orange Beauty’ (sneezeweed) is an upright herbaceous perennial with coppery-orange flowers in the late summer and autumn. It needs a fertile, moist but well-drained soil in full sun. The flowers in the herbaceous borders at the Royal Horticultural Society garden at Harlow Carr, North Yorkshire, UK, have inspired this amazing embroidery.

The glowing stems of Beta vulgaris subsp. vulgaris Flavescens Group (ruby chard) need to grow in an open sunny site in rich, moisture-retentive free-draining soil. Chard can tolerate some shade in summer.

Zinnia elegans 'Super Yoga Dark Red' provides a late season nectar stop for a red admiral (Vanessa atalanta) butterfly. These are visitors to gardens throughout the UK, the number seen depends on how many migrant butterflies reach these shores. Zinnia can be sown in a sunny, sheltered position where they are to flower once the danger of frost is over. Alternatively these half-hardy annuals can be sown under cover in individual containers in early spring. Then the growing tips can be pinched out when they are planted after the last frosts.

The Euonymus oxyphyllus (Korean spindle) was putting on a beautiful display of autumn coloured foliage and fruit. This deciduous, slow-growing hardy shrub or small tree is from Korea and surrounding countries. It produces small flowers in May and June on slender branches but autumn is the main display when the leaves glow with shades of red to purple, these compliment the red fruit and orange seeds.
