Making plant based milk is super easy!
I can’t believe I’ve only just found out about it now. Making milk from rice or oats is just ridiculously easy and so so much cheaper than buying vegan or lactose free milks at the supermarket. You have total control over what goes in it, and it requires minimal tools - things you probably already have at home. So here are my 2 recipes for plant based milks.
- strainer or nut milk bag
- something to boil water in
- something to store your milk in
- 1 cup of oats after soaking (depending on the type of oats you use the amount of dry oats you need will vary)
- enough hot water to cover your dry oats
- 3-5 cups of water (depending on how thick you want your milk to be)
- 1/4 tsp of salt (this will help keep your milk fresh for about 4 days)
- 1 tbsp of maple syrup or sweetener of your choice
- boil your water and let it cool so that it is hot but not still boiling
- place your dry oats in a cup or a jar and fill with the hot water until it just covers the top. Leave overnight
- rinse the oats thoroughly with water and put them in your blender with your water, salt, and sweetener
- blend for 1-2 minutes until liquified
- strain the liquid through your nut milk bag or just a fine strainer. Both work, but you may have to repeat this step to get all of the sediment out if you are using a strainer
- store your milk in the fridge and consume within 4 days
- 1 cup of rice after soaking
- enough hot water to cover your dry rice
- 1/4 tsp salt (this will help keep your milk fresh for about 4 days)
- 3-5 pitless dates (or 1 tbsp sweetener of your choice)
- boil your water and let it cool so that it is hot but not still boiling
- place your rice in your jar or cup and fill with hot water until it just covers the top. Leave it for 2 hours. Your rice should not be cooked fully, but still crumble if you pinch it.
- rinse the rice thoroughly and put it in the blender with your water, salt, and dates (I like to use 4 dates but use less or more to your preferred level of sweetness)
- blend for 1-2 minutes until liquified.
-strain the liquid through your nut milk bag or just a fine strainer. Both work, but you may have to repeat this step to get all of the sediment out if you are using a strainer
-store your milk in the fridge and consume within 4 days
Super easy, super cheap, super delicious. You can also experiment with other ingredients. Add cocoa powder and make chocolate milk!
Also you can incorporate the sediments into muffins or nutri-bars or anything like that so that nothing goes to waste.
And for my witchy friends out there, make your milk with your intent. Use ingredients with magickal properties. I’ve listed correspondences for all the ingredients I’ve used below.
