Five Books to Read if You're Writing a Memoir Pt. 2: One Native Life
Listen here: One Native Life by Richard Wagamese You’re more likely to know Wagamese for his fiction: Indian Horse was published in 2012 and made it to Canada Reads the following year. In 2017, it was released as a movie. But we’re here to talk about memoir, so let’s discuss One Native Life. Wagamese is a master storyteller, and that’s what he does best in this book. BOOK REVIEW 🔥 Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ TW: death, rape, racism, abuse I didn’t know I could be this sad about a book. I moved to Canada at 20 years of age and honestly, I didn’t know much about its history until I arrived here. After learning a little bit about residential schools from a friend, I took it upon myself to read more about this certain part of Canada’s history so when I saw this book and read the synopsis, I knew I just have to read this. Thank you @douglasmcintyre2013 for giving me a copy! The book follows Saul, a young Ojibway kid who was taken at a very young age and was forced in St. Jerome’s Indian Residential School. It opens in a sad tone, becomes even sadder, then turns to exciting but eventually reveals a heartbreaking past and introduces a hopeful ending. Richard Wagamese wrote it beautifully and realistically. It invokes feelings of sadness, hatred, and anger. But it also shows how the power of spirit and love for family can help people heal. 10/10 would recommend this book. #qotd what other books about this certain phase of Canada’s history would you recommend? 🔖 #indianhorse #saulindianhorse #richardwagamese #douglasmcintyre #bookishcanadians #bookblogger #bibliophile #bookstagramcanada #bookstagramphilippines #bookstagramfeature #bookishcommunity #booksofinstagram #bookreview #bookreviewer #igreads #bookworld #bookworm #booksbooksbooks #readersofinstagram #bookgram #booklover #booknerd #bookcommunity #bookstagrammer #goodreads #historicalfiction #literaryfiction #sportsfiction #canadianliterature (at Calgary, Alberta) https://www.instagram.com/p/CfH_rWOLFOa/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

All that we are is story. From the moment we are born to the time we continue on our spirit journey, we are involved in the creation of the story of our time here. It is what we arrive with. It is all we leave behind. We are not the things we accumulate. We are not the things we deem important. We are story. All of us. What comes to matter then is the creation of the best possible story we can while we’re here; you, me, us, together. When we can do that and we take the time to share those stories with each other, we get bigger inside, we see each other, we recognize our kinship – we change the world, one story at a time… #richardwagamese #wearestory #jimpoling #themindentimesontario #storymedicine #becomingmedicine #davidrkopacz (at Boston, Massachusetts) https://www.instagram.com/p/CDOx-BjhNlm/?igshid=fotgfn7svoxo
“THERE IS SUCH A POWERFUL eloquence in silence. True genius is knowing when to say nothing, to allow the experience, the moment itself, to carry the message, to say what needs to be said. Words are less important, less effective than feeling. When you can sit in perfect silence with someone, you truly know how to communicate.” . #Repost @lyndaacallen ・・・ @Regrann from @giftedmindfulness - START FROM STILLNESS . With the dawn of a new year, there is so much coming and going: messages, reflections, resolutions, imagining, feeling, and thinking. All of it blocks the true nature of WE that exists beneath all the noise and complexity. . Let's take a moment to breathe and drop into the silence beneath the cacophony. Allow the stillness to grow, to become more spacious. Bask in it. Let it hold you. Just for a moment, let there be nowhere to go ... nothing to do ... nothing to plan.... Only this. . Then emerge from and within this silent spaciousness - into the next moment, and the next. Into the day. And into this new year. "Ready to live out loud again," as First Nations storyteller Richard Wagamese reminds us: "sore and blue and jubilant, outrageous and raucous and clamouring for more. The sound of silence. The sound of self emerging." . May this New Year emerge from the stillness that holds it all. May we find and be at ease in the eloquence of silence. . .
