How Lucky by Will Leitch and narrated by Graham Halstead is the story of Daniel. “Daniel is a young man who has SMA - a debilitating disease that makes him unable to talk and confines him to a chair during the day. Daniel lives in Athens, GA and lives for football game Saturdays to cheer his Georgia Bulldogs (where Kirby us still trying to catch Coach Saban 🐘🏈) One morning Daniel sees an abduction from his porch. He cannot get the police to believe him so he takes to social media. Soon he is in conversation with the kidnapper and puts himself in danger.” You have to like Daniel and his awareness of his limitations but his unwillingness to fully accept them. Inside he is a regular guy with emotions and feelings like the rest of us. It’s just his body that doesn’t work right. You have to appreciate Daniel’s heart. And we could all take some customer service lessons from Daniel. One thing I thought that did not help the story was the numerous explanations of SMA. It reminded me of all the technical science parts of The Martian. It detracts more than adds. If you liked it in The Martian and PHM you would probably be okay here. Be sure to read the acknowledgments, especially the author’s personal connection to SMA. The One is a book from John Marrs - now playing on Netflix. This book is about the idea that everyone has a perfect genetic match and a company helps you find them - for a fee. There are several storylines that make this feel more like a collection of short stories with each story having a different resolution. There’s a serial killer, the scientist that discovered the gene, one who discovers something unexpected about his sexuality and another couple that fights attraction. Marrs does a nice job resolving the stories. I had a different idea for the serial killer but his worked 😱 I like the way Marrs stretches an idea just enough to make it seem believable. Do you believe there is one person out there for you? Meredith says that the first time she saw me she knew we would get married. And I was a mess. But here we are 39 years later better than ever. Hillbilly Elegy is a memoir from JD Vance. It’s his story of growing up in KY and OH as part of the working poor. He talks about his mother and her addictions - the importance of his Memaw and how having one stable adult probably saved him from the path that so many of his peers ended up on. The great lessons from the Marines that changed him. And how he graduated from Yale Law school. He offers commentary on Hillbillies and the working poor. I like that he references studies on this group instead of assuming his own life experiences are the same as everyone. So much of this was relatable. I grew up with an alcoholic father and you never knew what the evening would be like. (Oh the stories l could tell) Vance does the narration and does a great job. I imagine it was cathartic to write this learning that others share your experiences and also managed to change their trajectory. Be careful not to listen to this around little ones - Memaw had a potty mouth and was never afraid to speak her mind or break out the guns. I have not watched the Netflix show yet. Saw so many great reviews for this audiobook l put a hold at the library. 10 weeks later it showed up - worth the wait. McConaughey narrates. The book is a collection of stories and thoughts from his life growing up to present. His idea of greenlights is his version of “If life gives you lemons...” Lots of examples of life’s curveballs making new opportunities. Sometimes he gets a little woo-woo, especially when he talks about dreams that told him to swim the Amazon or wrestle some guy in Africa. But there are plenty of nuggets to make you think. This is a short audiobook - about 6 1/2 hours. Well worth a listen. You may have seen the TV show, The 100. It’s based on this book - The 100 by Kass Morgan. “Years after the human race has fled to space escaping from nuclear armageddon, the leaders of the refugees decide to send teenagers back to Earth to see if it’s habitable again. This group of 100 is chosen from the teens that are currently in confinement. Their drop ship crashes on Earth and many are hurt and critical supplies are missing. And since most of them are criminals it’s becoming dangerous for everyone in their camp. And what’s out there beyond the trees?” I picked this up because I loved the show. (The first couple of seasons until it went off the rails 🤷🏼‍♂️) This might be the rare time the show us better than the book. The story is told from several POVs of the teens. There are several characters and story lines that are different from the show. I love the idea and the setting but the story never grabs me. I blame that on the expectations from watching the show. If you’ve never watched it, you might enjoy this book. The audiobook performance was very good.
