I know it's because they're showing all the President Curtis episodes due to both July 4th and his upcoming spinoff. But part of me can't stop cackling at the idea that someone at Adult Swim went, "We know America doesn't deserve a big birthday party on the 4th of July, but you know what it DOES deserve? An extra airing of *this* Rick and Morty episode, even though we normally (with good reason) never put this one on outside of the normal rerun cycles." 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

First Rick and Morty S5E4 rewatch since it aired (Rickdependence Spray) (Wish me luck!)

First reaction: I scrolled through season 4 and was confused as to why I couldn't find it. Then realized, with mounting horror, that it actually happened in season 5?

This episode occurred 2 episodes after Mortyplicity- which is one of my favorite episodes- and I hold this episode responsible for ruining the general reception of it, because people generally don't talk about the first half of season 5 at all. Which is a shame, because Mortyplicity is really good.

God, the intro is... Painfully funny, but deeply uncomfortable!! Seeing as it's supposed to be uncomfortable, I can't really critique it, but, as Beth will say in a later episode regarding "whale semen", "okay, that last one was clearly for shock value". There's a certain amount of this episode which really feels like we're being held captive and forced to laugh at gunpoint? Once again much like the R*iland comedy style

I suppose my main question is why the fuck did Beth not realize that Morty's sudden change of heart about the horse hospital was suspicious as hell?

"Beth, can you give me a minute? I'm trying to steer round the bodies of our neighbors. Ugh, that felt like Gene."

Amazing implications. The animation is also really beautiful? And then every other frame there's just a giant sperm ruining the money shot.

Anyway. Uh. Time to treat this episode seriously, and analyse why the fuck it happened and what it was trying to say.

Why it happened: Behind the scenes drama and a fractured writing room? A cry for help? Who the fuck knows. Fuck you, Season 5.

What it was trying to say: This family dynamic is really toxic and this family REALLY needs therapy. Underlying political message: The American Government created a giant incest baby. (it's a metaphor for capitalism, Morty) also... "That's a human life, and this is an election cycle"

Aged interestingly, given the abortion bans at play in this country, and The General State Of Things. Summer was also directly denied bodily autonomy by the president of the United States of America after having her contributions ignored, co-opted, overwritten and belittled. That's not... Nothing. The statement here is obvious. Coupled with lines like "you became a woman today"/"ready for all of the responsibility and none of the credit?", it's... Surprisingly a really decent indictment of faux feminism in media and the types of "girl power" moments in action movies they're parodying. I'm actually a little in love with that statement. I remember appreciating it when the episode first aired, although I obviously came away from it with mixed emotions.

Iconic lines: (mainly thanks to the president): "Space sperm? Jesus, how big are space dicks?"

"I have an heir!" / "I have a substance abuse problem."**

I'm annoyed that so many iconic lines happen in this episode and we can never ever talk about them because it's the giant sperm incest baby episode. It's absolutely depraved. It's fucking funny. It's horrible. I'm going to wait another 6 years before I rewatch it.

Verdict: Actually a really funny episode, and I'm mad about it. I am ready to forgive the episode, though.

Bonus details: I also really enjoyed watching Rick's bored/disgusted facial expressions when dealing with the Marines' hyper-masculine bravado. Truly a Queen among men.

**It absolutely makes sense that this is the episode which made Rick admit he wasn't in control of his drinking (etc.) and was probably the catalyst for change somewhere along the line.
