It was supposed to be just another day at work for Rick DX-318. A busy day, sure—after all, it was the Thursday before Valentine's Day—but Dex had been working at Mate Mart for years now and he knew the ropes. Just get through this weekend, and on the other side he and the other machine operators would go on their annual pub crawl and blow off this steam. Just get through. Just ignore the clammer of voices in the crowded room that itched at the back of his poor autistic brain. Just do one job at a time.
The unimpressive Morty seated across from him looked nervous. Dex was too tired to smile and put him at ease. His new work polo was rough against his skin all day, and it had him in a mood.
"Put your hand in the machine," he instructed. He picked up his clipboard and clicked his pen, holding it at the ready.
''Just... in? Like...?"
"Just put it in there, flat on the table." Two clicks. "Ok, Morty...” Here he checked the paperwork. “G-116, what brings you in today?”
Morty's brow knit in confusion. "Same thing as everyone else? I-I wanna find my Soul mate."
"Yeah...you're gonna have to dig a little deeper if you want the process to work. The machine can't analyze your emotional resonance unless you're actually feeling something. I already know why you're here, but why are you here?"
''O-Oh. Well, um..." Morty squirmed in his seat. The machine began to hum. "I’m. I'm lonely. Like, r-really lonely."
"You're single?"
''Yes."
"Do you have a Rick?"
"K-kind of?"
"There's no 'kind of' box on my sheet, kid. Yes or no."
"Yes, then? I-I... I ran away from him but I think he's p-probably still on the Citadel."
Dex scrawled a note. "Why did you run away?"
"He..." Morty looked sick to his stomach. ''Do I really have to say? C-Can I just think about it and the machine will know?"
"Sorry, kid. This is the process." It wasn't like Dex was thrilled to hear the boy's trauma dump, either, but it was a living. Just barely.
''H-He tried to...y'know...” Morty's eyes were welling with tears.
"Look." Dex put down the clipboard and leaned forward. Morty mirrored his posture naturally. “You're not the only one here with a past. I did 25 years in Earth prison. I'm extremely personally acquainted with the concept of rape, if you catch my drift. It's ok. You can say it."
Morty broke down all at once. The machine chimed cheerfully.
"My grandpa tried to rape me," he managed to say. "I keep thinking he’ll show up to find me any time now. I'm scared all the t-t-time."
Dex made another note. Staring at the clipboard was so much easier than looking at Morty. "Did you get yourself emancipated yet? We have a legal service on standby for customers who match outside of their original pairs."
"He'd have t-t-to sign, right? I can't..." Morty sniffled. ''I can't do that.”
"Alright. Whatever you say goes. But how about I give you the brochure anyway?"
“Yeah, ok. Sure."
Morty darted a look up at him, a shy, guileless glance. Rick quickly turned his attention to his own hands, to the blown out, faded old tattoos on his knuckles. He didn't like getting too chummy with the customers. He busied himself flipping to page 2.
"If you could pick, who would be your soulmate?” he read.
"Geez. I don't r-really even know. I used to think maybe the Jessica from my dimension, O-o-or...there was this really funny Morty at my old job. I liked him but I was too scared to ask him out."
"What do you like about them?”
"I guess they're both really cute. Like s-soft and pretty. And gentle. Like, they both wanted me to feel good about my self, I could tell. I want someone sweet like that to want to be with me, too." Morty was welling up again. "I just want someone like that to love me.”
The machine, pleased with the display, chugged through its calculations faster. It was almost finished.
"What do you like about yourself?" Dex prompted.
"Oh man..." Morty shrugged one shoulder, his lips turned down in a hard frown. "I d-dunno... nothing, I guess."
''Dig deep." Dex was rooting for the kid. What a pathetic case. The charitable man in him wanted this one to be a success story.
''I guess..." Morty took a deep, shuddering breath. "I'm good to people even when I'm hurting. I-I still want to help people so they can be happy. Even though people are mean to me a lot, it didn't make me be mean back. So I like that."
Ding! The machine pinged, startling Morty. A printout slid onto the tray.
"Congrats, kid. You actually have an other half out there! It's—“
Dex read the page. Rick Sanchez, DX-318. He blanched. Read it again. Rick Sanchez, DX-318. Again. Again. Nothing changed. He lost track of the world, dropped the paper.
"No way," he said, blankly.
"DX-318?”
"Who—“ Dex looked around at the row of tables where his coworkers were all busy.
"Isn't that you? A-Are you fucking with me?''
"Which one of you fucks did this?" Dex demanded, shooting out of his chair, voice booming.
"Is this for real?" Morty asked, but Dex barely heard him.
"You do this, C-487? You fucking—“ he stepped menacingly towards the worker at the next station over.
"Do what?" the other Rick asked, clearly confused.
The manager was on his way over, but Dex shouldered past. "I’m taking my 15," he said, and didn't stop to be told no.
"Wait!" called Morty somewhere behind him.
Rick pushed through the break room and out onto the walled back patio where a Rick lingered by the ashtray.
"Out! Get out!” Dex thundered.
“What—“
"OUT!"
The other Rick didn't stay to argue, but when he headed inside Morty passed him. Now the boy was between Dex and the door, and he was walled in on all sides, trapped like an animal. He was ready to chew his own leg off to escape, but he couldn’t bring himself to step towards his soulmate.
"Wh-What's happening Rick?" Morty asked, breathless and pinkened from exertion.
"I don't know!" Trapped, Dex paced back and forth, pulling at his hair. "Someone must have fucked with my machine, it must be some kind of prank, I—“
"What if it's not, though?"
Dex's brain was melting down. He thought about his shabby, half-hoarded studio apartment. He thought of the k-tax pipe in the bag in his locker, the days and nights spent in the numb embrace of drugs. He thought about the day that he killed his daughter, how crazed he still was when the cops came to take him, high off his ass and running amok. He couldn't do this. He couldn't have a soulmate. He couldn't care for a Morty. He didn't even want to care for himself .
"Trust me, kid, you're better off if it's a prank. You don't want me for your other half."
''What..." Morty stepped forward, making Rick shrink back. "What if, though?"
"’What if' is bullshit. ‘What if’ is wishful thinking."
"I bet you're lonely, too, though, right?"
"That's not the point. You don't want me, Morty. I'm just like your piece of shit grandpa, ok? I'm just... I'm not a good person."
"I deserve love," Morty said, jaw set, fists batted tightly. "I deserve love! I deserve for someone to try for me!”
''I—“
"So try! Just try, Rick!"
He pressed his lips together hard, breathing through his nose. Nothing made any sense now. In a world where he could feel love again, he didn't know his place. But Morty's pain was breaking his heart, and the boy wanted to crawl into the cracks of it with probing roots like a weed growing in concrete. Could someone really want him again? He was so afraid. He took a deep breath.
"Call me Dex," he said, offering his hand.
It was a start, at least.

They called him Super Rick Fan, which Morty had to admit was a fair assessment. He just couldn’t help it. Ricks were just so cool. They were tall and handsome, with those sapphire eyes and cocky grins. And Ricks could do anything, anything in the world. They made portal guns and drove space ships and captured teams of Mortys to grace them with their godly presence. Super Rick Fan would have been the best Morty a Rick could ever have if only he got the chance, but for some reason they always fled him. Even his own grandpa had pronounced him crazy and dumped him on the Citadel one day, never to return.
On a normal Sunday afternoon, Morty sat in his claustrophobic living room working on his new hat. He had designed it himself, and now he was lovingly rendering the peaks of a classic Rick hairdo in blue felt. In wandered his roommate, Mixologist Morty, late rising after a closing shift at the bar. Morty barely looked up until Mixy came to hover over him, casually holding a bowl and spoon.
"Ok, d-don't start," Morty said, watching Mixy chew on a bite of his cereal.
"This is so cringe," Mixy replied, his mouth full.
"M-Maybe I'm cringe but at least I know what I want."
"There's no 'maybe' about it.” Mixy sat on the other end of the couch.
"I can't help it. Every time I think about a big strong Rick h-holding me close, I just..." He sighed, feeling sappy.
"You're a h-hopeless case," Mixy agreed.
"I want my own Rick so bad. Is that too much to ask? I-I'd be a good Morty. No, the best Morty if a Rick would just give me a chance."
The corner of Mixy's mouth twitched upwards. "Bet you'd do anything to get a date with a Rick."
"To have a Rick pay attention to me a-a-and kiss me and..." He trailed off into private, erotic thoughts, face warming.
"So, say I had a Rick's number right here," said Mixy, holding up a folded piece of paper between his fingers.
"Gimme!" said Morty, making a lunge.
Mixy snatched the paper away. "Ah, ah, ah! What's it worth to you?"
"Anything."
"Like cleaning the food trap in the dishwasher?"
Morty's stomach soured just thinking about it. "The one we haven't cleaned in two years?"
"The one and only."
"Is it a real Rick's real number? And d-don't lie."
"It really is. Last night this guy came to the bar, and..."
The previous night...
"He was such a cute li’l shit, look," Rick slurred, waving the wallet-sized photo in the bartender's face. In it, a 6 year old Morty smiled expansively at the camera, his face smeared with blue from his melting popsicle.
"Uh huh." The bartender spared the picture a glance, which Rick appreciated. He was already planning to tip big because the 'tender was a Morty—probably exploited, poor thing—but he mentally added to the total for the kind gesture. "Tell him I said cute pic."
"He's dead." Rick's melancholy was mellowed by the haze of alcohol.
"Geez. I'm sorry. Another?" The bartender held up the bottle of run he'd been serving Rick from.
Rick nodded and nudged his empty glass towards the boy, who mixed him a new rum and coke. "I never got to meet him in person. He was 8. Car accident."
"That sucks."
"I just want my very own Morty to love." Rick gazed despondently at the photo before putting it away.
"Aren't there tons of Mortys up for adoption?"
"The agencies, uh..." Embarrassed, Rick bought himself a moment by taking a drink. "They all rejected me. Too ‘enthusiastic.’"
"How about catching one?"
"I couldn't do that to a sweet little Morty! Those manipulator chips are barbaric.” He sighed. "I would never hurt a Morty. I just want to hold one close and count his tiny fingers and smell his hair..."
"You're a real Super Fan, aren't you?"
"I'm the number one Morty fan of all time," Rick agreed
"So, actually, I kind of know a guy you m-might like."
"A Morty?" Rick couldn't hide his excitement.
"Yeah. He's really into Ricks. I can give him your number if—“
Rick was already scribbling it down on his receipt.
And now back to the present...
Morty was shaking in his shoes, pacing while the phone rang. What if Rick didn't answer? What if he didn't want to go out? So many things could go wrong. Maybe he should just hang—
''Hello?" a Rickish voice said, flattened a bit by the phone line.
"Rick?"
"Morty?"
"Is this the Rick who wants to go on a date with Mixy's—th-th-the bartender's roommate?''
"You’re the bartender's roommate?"
"Yeah. I'm..." Morty's mouth felt so dry. "I’m F-68—“
"Can I just call you Morty?"
Morty's smile was so big it made his cheeks hurt. "Yeah! I mean y-yeah. I'd like that. What's your—“
"I'd like it if you just call me Rick, too."
"I'd really like that."
"I know it's super fast, but..." Rick took a shaky breath. "Are you doing anything tomorrow?”
"Nope! I-I'm all free," said Morty, now planning to tell his manager he was sick. This was far more important.
''The Gaflorpian cherry trees are blooming. We could have a picnic.”
"I'll pack it! I-I'm a good cook," said Morty, though he had never really tried before. How hard could it be?
"We could meet at the 12th Residential District City Park at noon.”
"Sounds great, Rick."
"Yeah. Sounds great." Morty could hear the sappy smile in Rick's voice.
Cooking went very, very poorly, so Morty waited the next day at the park gate with a backpack stuffed with cheese, fruit, and crackers instead. He was wearing his new Rick-hair hat despite Mixy's efforts to make him leave it behind. It was only ll:41, but he was already crying from the stress, fearing that he would be stood up.
Then a special Rick rounded the corner, headed for the park. He was wearing a homemade felt hat shaped like a Morty's hair, As soon as they saw each other, something sparked between them. The air was electric, fizzing like champagne with barely contained energy as they made introductions. But they were both shy and relatively quiet on their way to a private spot beneath the trees.
Petals fell like rosy snow every time the wind shifted. They made bashful small talk and nibbled the charcuterie (it turned out that Morty wasn't a fan of most of the fancy cheeses, but he pretended anyway), both blushing and giggly. Soon their shoulders began to relax and their words flowed more smoothly.
"Ok, ok. Me next. favorite." color. One, two, three—“
Both answered at the same time.
"Blue!" shouted Morty.
"Yellow!" shouted Rick.
Morty fell into a fit of giggles. "We should both start liking green, then." His eyes flicked up to Rick's. The warmth he saw there gave him palpitations.
"We could live in a little green house," said Rick, though then he seemed to catch himself. "I mean if we—“
"We should!" Morty put his fingers to his lips. "I-I mean..."
Rick reached out, silent, taking Morty's hand tenderly. Morty's eyes welled with tears. This felt like a dream come true. He gazed longingly at Rick, hoping against hope.
"If you let me love you, I'll love you forever," said Rick. Morty could hear a tremble in his voice.
''Oh, Rick..."
"I feel like I've waited for you for so long. I..."
"Me, too. I love you already." Morty moved forward on his knees, and Rick held him close. "Will you be m-my Rick?"
"Of course I will, Morty. And I’ll protect you, I’ll make you smile. I'll be so good to you, Morty. And we'll run around all over the place doing Rick and Morty things, just every day, Rick and Morty stuff. Forever and ever, Rick and Morty, in the green house Rick and—“
Morty couldn't wait any longer. He threw his arms around Rick and crashed their mouths together in an inelegant kiss. Rick pushed his hat off to tangle his fingers in Morty's curls, pulling him in to deepen the kiss. Rick's tongue was so nice against his own, warm and strong and assertive. Morty let himself be kissed, let himself be lowered to the grass on his back. Rick's strong body held him down. Morty's nerves stood on end, and when Rick asked his permission to touch him all he had to say was yes, yes, yes!
Two months later, after the honeymoon, Rick and Morty sat together in a slowly cooling bath in their little green house. Rick's magical fingers were kneading the ache out of Morty's back. They had never been so happy before, neither of them.
"My Morty," Rick sighed, as he sometimes did. It was like he couldn't believe how lucky he was.
"You make me feel s-so special."
"You are special." Rick kissed the tip of his ear. "You're my Morty. The best Morty."
"My Rick. The best Rick." Morty craned around to catch Rick’s lips. They kissed, lingering, heat beginning to build.
"'You’re all..." Rick whispered.
"…I've ever wanted," Morty finished.
Day 3 for @rickortyweek
“You’re gonna be fine. Grandpa’s here.” Tho I think I need some warnings before letting you read: sex with a dragon (but no actual penetration), dub-con
"Balth-!" Morty squeaked, trying to wiggle out from under the dragon. The sudden change in Balthromaw's mind was surprising, but it was nice to know that he wasn't the only one who enjoyed their rides together. Maybe Rick’s warnings were good for something, maybe he really managed to change the beast’s mind while the two of them disappeared.
Still, what Balthromaw required in exchange for being his pet dragon was-
"Do you or do you not want to be my rider?" The huge dragon asked dryly, his eyes showing how unimpressed he was with Morty. It felt as if it was Rick who was looking at him, face full of displeasure and detachment.
The young boy swallowed, and nodded. Just like he agreed to anything his grandpa wanted him to do.

Rick should never have listened to Tammy, but she was Brandon’s girlfriend now and his best friend was so pussy-whipped that he had lost his damn mind. He was always telling Rick she wasn’t so bad, that they should just let her have her way, that he needed to loosen up. Who the hell had ever told Rick to loosen up?! Ridiculous. She was a megabitch, but Brandon couldn’t see it and Sam was too high all the time to really make much of an ally. So when Tammy sprang the dare on him in the popular kids’ group text, Rick had found himself quite alone in objecting.
Fine. They had bribed him eventually with some molly and so tonight he had found himself picking up Morty Smith to be his date to homecoming.
It didn’t go the way Rick had expected at all. Morty was cute, now that Rick actually stopped to look, and his company felt like a warm glow, like a fire in the hearth in the deep midwinter. He was almost too shy to look at Rick at all, but he laughed at his jokes with such sincerity. He was clearly nervous about showing up to the dance with a boy, and Rick had sympathy for his fretting; coming out wasn't easy. Everyone knew that Rick was a shameless pansexual slut, but rumors about Morty's sexuality had been pure speculation. That was why, Tammy had explained, this was going to be so epic.
Halfway through the first slow dance, Rick had started to doubt his mission. It felt so nice to hold the other boy in his arms. There was something about their connection that was so electric. Rick hadn't ever felt this way about a date before. No crush had ever had his heart in his throat like this.
As the dance progressed he had grown even more jittery. Now was supposed to be the time. Rick had driven them to the park near his house to sit on the picnic tables and watch the stars twinkle. He took belts from his flask, hoping to fortify himself and just get the stupid dare over with. He chain smoked, too, lighting each new one with the glowing cherry of the previous as they chatted nervously.
''H-Hey, Rick?" Morty, eyes cast down, picked at a loose thread on his cuff.
"Yeah?"
''I had s-such a good time," he said. He spoke slowly, like he was navigating a minefield one step at a time.
"Good." Was it, though? Maybe this would be easier if Morty had already been disillusioned. ''That was the point, right?''
''I guess. But..." He glanced up at Rick and back down.
Rick gave him some time to go on, but the air remained still. "But what?" he prompted.
"But why did you ask me out?" There was a thickness to his voice now. "You don't know me. You're probably the most popular guy in school a-a-and I'm just the kid who gets shoved in lockers."
''That's, uh..." Rick flicked his cigarette away; it didn't taste so good anymore. "That's pretty insightful, there."
"Everyone thinks I'm so s-stupid, so I guess you thought I wouldn't notice it was weird."
"Yeah…I guess you're not so dumb, after all."
Rick had a sudden need to not be there, so he stood abruptly and walked down the slope to the bank of the pond. He picked up a stone and sent it skipping over the calm waters. Morty wasn't far behind, but at least on his feet Rick felt a little less trapped.
"So why?" Morty demanded. ''What's the deal? Wh-Why are you even hanging out with me?"
"Mysterious popular guy reasons." With a sharp throw, Rick skipped another stone.
"It's not funny.''
"I'm not laughing.''
"I just wished i-it could be real." Morty was definitely crying now. Rick resisted the urge to look. "You did everything so romantic. And w-w-we slow danced and everything. I guess I really am stupid."
A third stone went flying over the dark water. "I had a good time, too. I had a great time."
"Liar."
"Sure, I'm a liar. But I mean this one."
"You know I'm just unpopular and ugly and stupid, s-so just take me home, Rick!"
"You're not ugly. You're kind of infuriatingly cute."
"Stop it." Pathetic, Morty sniffled wetly.
Finally, Rick turned to face the other boy. He reached out and took his hand, and he held it though Morty tried to jerk away. Rick pulled him close and slipped his arm around him. They both breathed unevenly, frozen in the moonlight.
"I'm gonna kiss you, now," said Rick, slow and even like Morty was a frightened horse.
''R-Really?"
Morty's rose petal lips tasted like his salt tears, but that felt somehow so perfect, It was like he could taste the intensity of the moment. The spark Rick felt as soon as they touched nearly took his legs from under him. He clutched tighter, pulling Morty's tiny body against his own. Everything else fell away, all the sludge of Rick's misery sloughed off to leave this perfect moment unsullied. Morty's mouth opened for his tongue so eagerly. This kiss was different from any Rick had ever felt. It was like their hearts had synced up with the press of their lips. Morty moaned into his mouth.
When Rick pulled away, Morty clutched at his shirt and bounced up on his toes to try and chase the kiss. He had lost all control, crying so hard now. Rick brushed tears from his cheeks. He felt such a strong need to protect this boy. Self hatred coiled in wait at the edge of his mind, waiting to punish him for what he had meant to do to this sweet angel.
"Be my novio," he said, surprising both of them. Yet as soon as the words took form, he felt the true desire in them.
"What?"
"Boyfriend. Be my boyfriend."
Morty, still crying, studied Rick's face. "Wh-Why did you ask me to the dance?"
"Come on, Morty. I-I don't want to talk about that."
"Why? I need to know the truth."
"It doesn't matter anymore, ok? I like you now. I want us to be together."
"I can't do it i-i-if you can just lie to me." Morty was shaking so hard he could barely keep his feet, so Rick scooped him up in his arms to carry him back to the picnic tables.
"It was a dare," he said, looking anywhere but Morty's face.
“I knew it.” Morty's voice echoed up out of a pit of misery.
"I was supposed to try and get a picture of your dick and show it to those assholes."
Morty only cried harder. He tried to speak but nothing came out right.
Rick placed him gently on the tabletop. "It's not like that any more."
"I wanna go h-home."
"Will you just listen to me? I want you to be my boyfriend. I don't want you to cry anymore.” Rick clasped Morty's hand in his own. "I've never been someone's boyfriend and I—I just know I’m gonna be a fuckup but you make me feel things, Morty, and I want to try for you, so please?"
"Your friends will make fun of you if you really mean it."
"Then they're dicks and I don't wanna be like that anymore. I'd rather lose all of them than do this stupid bet to you"
"If you don't care about your reputation then why do you care about my reputation?”
"Because I deserve it and you don't." Rick placed a tender kiss on Morty’s forehead. "I can take it. Fuck anyone who wants to keep us apart. You..." Rick grit his teeth, breathed through his nose. "Please, Morty?"
Morty buried his face against Rick's chest. A light breeze ruffled Rick's hair, tickling his ear. For a long time, it was quiet between them.
''O-Ok. Yes.” Morty’s lip was trembling when he looked up at Rick. “I want that. I want it so bad."
Rick crushed Morty’s body against his own. He didn't know what to say. A thrill shook him and left him exhausted in its wake. They found each other's lips again, and there was fire between them now. Rick swallowed Morty's sobs right off of his tongue.
The heat faded gradually, and Rick slipped his phone from his pocket. He broke away from Morty's sweet kisses just long enough to open the camera app and get the two of them in frame. Arm looped around Morty's neck, Rick took a picture of himself kissing Morty on the corner of his mouth, flipping off the camera all the while. Morty even giggled when he was done. Rick felt his heart brighten, lighting him up from within. This was going to be the best adventure, he could just feel it.
Later that night, after makeouts and mosquito bites and the inevitable fight with his dad after missing curfew, Rick sat in his room smiling at the photographic evidence of his good fortune. He sent the photo to the group text, along with a caption.
