02/04/2017 | Be More Mike | Norwich - King’s Lynn
Day 2. Morning starts in sleepy Norwich with eggs and pancakes courtesy of the much-recommended Street Café. Then up to Cromer.
The weather change, as I reach the coast, is brutal. I can barely get through my snack (Crème Egg Rocky Road bar from the aforementioned Norwich establishment) but then hypothermia hits. I’ve got to get inside for a cup of tea before I hit the road again. Five places turn me down flat. You’re not coming in with a bike. No. Finally, blue in the face, I find the Red Lion. Not only do they let me in, they surprise me with a cinnamon swirl. Score!
Thereafter I abandon my plans to go along the coastline and head inland, towards King’s Lynn. Headwind persists, and cars whizz past. I think of Mike Hall and his incredible feats of endurance cycling around the world. Will Transcontinental continue? Suddenly taking risks has lost its appeal. Instead of continuing towards London and risking getting caught in the dark, I call it a day and get on the train.
Coming with me from Norfolk is the skull of a badger, found in the bushes during one of my pit stops. A souvenir, and a memento mori. Keep riding, but above all, stay safe.
