A Moment of Zen! This area is near one of the hiking trails in Riding Mountain National Park. It was early in the morning and I found the sound of birds to be joyful to listen to. It was so peaceful with the breeze rustling through the reeds and the birds chirping. There were also a couple bees buzzing around the flowers. This is what I think of when I think of a zen moment. A Barn Swallow building a nest. Barn Swallows are an intensely beautiful blue and rust coloured bird. They are super fast and can turn on a dime in flight as they soar through the air. Unfortunately their nesting spots are becoming endangered, Barn Swallows nest in the rafters of barns, but barns are vanishing leaving these birds no place to call home. As the old barns collapse or are torn apart so to are these birds homes. Conservationists are trying to create fake barn rafters throughout national parks and wildlife refuges, but they need the help of people who have the ability to place similar structures on their property. Yesterday was a day filled with Bears. I saw 6 Black Bears and 1 Brown Bear. I was driving through @riding_mtn_national_park and saw a mother bear and her two little cubs. As soon as I slowed down to take a photo the cubs climbed the trees and the mother kept eating. A little while later I saw a second mother bear at the other end of the park with her three cubs eating the dandelions. I also saw a lone male eating dandelions. Later in the afternoon I went for a walk on my friends ranch and encountered a brown bear next to the path I was on. I found this little male Palm Warbler near a marsh in @riding_mtn_national_park as the sun was setting. He matched the colours in the background so well that I almost missed him. This bird likes to live in boreal forests and are know to migrate from Canada to the Caribbean. This is a Purple Finch. That’s right a “purple” finch. Obviously the person naming the bird was colour blind. 🤷🏼‍♀️😂 it is a small migratory Bird, so it‘s only in the area for a short time. I missed earth day but was planning on posting this photo. The American Bison/Buffalo were almost hunted to extinction. Their numbers went from tens of millions to 541 during the 1800’s. The Bison/Buffalo numbers are not what they once were but they are coming back because of parks like the Bison enclosure at Riding Mountain National Park.
