Ringu 2 (Hideo Nakata, 1999)
I watched all the ringu and ring movies yesterday. I feel like the western one failed at its adaption because they didn’t try to make the story fit within our cultural context. It just made more sense in the original Japanese version I think it was the seers that really made it work as well as its connection to a culture. Think they could have made it work if they connected it to some of the Christian cults we have because then they could have added the psychic stuff back without it seeming too out of place. Overall original was definitely better and I cared more about the characters. The acting was a lot better and their choices all made sense even if they weren’t necessarily a good one. The music was more suspenseful too. My main takeaway from the films is don’t abuse your kids and you’ll probably be alright. Turns out abuse is bad for them and can lead to a build up of negative energy that can create a curse.
