ok I just finished kpop demon hunters and I loved it but I did have some critiques about the pacing of jinu and rumi’s relationship

spoilers below

I actually really liked how complex jinu’s relationship was to his humanity and how early on we had it established that he had a soft spot for rumi as a result. BUT the duet song they have feels unearned. I COULD like their relationship more if there was more time for development.

I understand it’s a movie time constraints etc, but rumi singing about how she “needs jinu by her side” feels unearned, especially when the prior interaction is him awkwardly brushing off the older woman who implies rumi is his gf. how did we get to love from that?

it feels like too fast of a jump, and it’s hard for me to believe she has that deep of feelings for him. I do think he makes her feel seen, and that’s a beautiful aspect of their relationship. but I couldn’t fully appreciate the tragedy and magnitude of his ‘betrayal’ because the stakes weren’t really set for their relationship to be that deep in the first place.

I would’ve been more on board had there been more time for development, even just in-between moments of them stealing away. even like a montage or something. bc the pacing btw them made it feel too rushed. not impossible, but rushed for the depth of feelings, at least on rumi’s end. I do think it’s a shame, because the movie was absolutely gorgeously animated, and you can tell a lot of heart and soul went into it.

overall, I really liked it, but I do wish they had more time developing jinu and rumi’s relationship so we could see the fully realized final form and appreciate it in its full depth.

Im planning to make like . proper things for this . like with drawn refs and all, but for now a textpost will have to suffice . these'll be more baseline too: RINU YOSHIOKA: -She is the leader of the group, and an adventurer -Her main weapon is a big axe [that she decorated with charms n stuff] -28, she/her, transfem, aroace -Autism, bpd -Shes from Wonderland -Shes loud, energetic, chaotic and very happy most of the time . she loves her friends and shes always been curious to explore the world, so naturally she ended up being an adventurer . shes an extremely skilled fighter as well . her and her team are regarded as heroes since most of the exploration work also involves your typical having-to-kill-monsters-and-shit . people think shes stupid at first but shes actually incredibly smart, and very used to being infantilized [she uses it to commit to the bit and act dumb sometimes for the sake of The Bit] . in her teenage years, she spent her life locked up in her bedroom, never going anywhere and usually just sleeping, she absolutely hates doing that now [leading her to have a bit of insomnia] . shes very brave too! though her biggest fear is porcelain dolls, no one really knows why . she looves cute stuff too . shes the most emotionally mature out of the group, and helps them with their feelings, even though she is TERRIBLE at dealing with hers . -Killed a dragon once while she was drunk on 8 bottles of beer btw -shes quite short, around 5'5 -Her younger sister is Mayu Yoshioka -Being a regular citizen of Wonderland, she's one of the rare ones that have magic! she has hope magic [basically gains power from the hope of the people around her, can feel people's hope, and use it in the form of specific spells and energy beams . by hopes of everyone i mean it btw . even dead people .] but usually just uses her axe for stuff . she also has healing magic . shes a very good magical medic, people think shed be a good nurse . DOC: -They're an expert mage -Their main weapon is their staff -28, they/them, nonbinary, aroace -Autism, bpd -Theyre from Asteria -They're the most level headed out of the group, usually being the one to make rational choices when no one else does . they have a bit of social anxiety tho so public speaking really isnt their thing . theyre a massive perfectionist, wanting to perfect their magic skills to the utmost, and become one of the greatest Asterian mages of all time . They also like to explore, partially in hopes that it'll help them with their abilities and such . theyve been quite lonely their entire life, so now that the have a whole group of friends to travel with, they can finally live a bit better . that being said their perfectionism leads them to overwork a LOT, which intern makes them very tired usually . and kinda grouchy . Very bad at emotions i fear -Their blue skin is a birth defect, it doesnt do anything besides just Be Blue, but they get looks from people for it sometimes [not that they care . totally not/sarc] -shorter than rinu, 5'4 -they hate their family, their father was mostly absent while their mother was overbearing and pushed them way too much, leading them to uh . end up like this . -They have a very deep fascination with water and marine biology in particular, they aim to especially master water magic . they visit the water bodies around Asteria and Wonderland a lot NINA: -She's an inventor and an alchemist -Her main weapon is well . whatever inventions of hers she has on hand . tend to be medieval type firearms and her warhammer tho . also has a pair of fake wings that she uses sometimes -27, she/they/it, pangender fem, lesbian . Dating heath . -bpd + autism [through peer reviews] -Shes from the outskirts of Wonderland

-at first she seems polite and well mannered, which she certainly is, but thats kind of all people know her for besides her inventions and alchemy . Shes the second most level headed but tends to zone out a LOT to think about other things . Do NOT bring her to a cave bc she WILL space out and run off to collect rocks for her newest alchemy experiment . Shes also more prone to danger bc of this i.e. all the times she almost touched fire by accident before heath saved her . Not only does she want recognition for her craft, she also wants to travel around the world to further her inventions and alchemy, similarly to doc [they get along bc of this] . Despite her general friendliness and polite attitude, shes actually quite distrusting of most people . It took her a very long time [arc 2] to properly trust doc and rinu . The only person she trusted fully was heath and now doc and rinu too . She has a complicated relationship to her gender as well . She was born and raised in a religious cult [fun fact: two more characters in the au were also apart of this cult!!] that basically engrained into her head that inventing and alchemy was "impure" for her and "not feminine enough", and she was constantly pressured to present fem and look pretty . She barely had any friends . She managed to sneak an invention or two sometimes but mostly she didnt have anything within her interest to do . The cult was horrendously abusive obviously, and the ideas from it that were pushed onto her still affect her now . She apologizes way too much and is afraid to be dependent on people in fear of being lied to like she was her entire life in the cult . Everything of course changes when her family takes her to heaths hometown [i dont have a name for it yet </3] and she meets well . Heath . They get off EXTREMELY well for the time they see each other, and at that point they were each others only friends . And luckily, nina gets to visit his hometown quite a few times as theres cult relations there!! And well . When nina finally escapes at the age of around 19 or 20, heath just so happens to be the only person she knows outside the cult . She takes a gruelling journey to heaths hometown mostly by foot and eventually finds her shop . Heath, of course is very surprised and extremely concerned, and agrees to let them live in her home . They grow accustomed to each other as nina stays there for id say an year or two, eventually gaining enough crystals [money equivalent . Basic ik </3] to bounce back up and but her own home . And in that time the two dense dumbasses realize both of them have a crush on each other . It took them months for heath to finally confess to her and yeah . Nina and heath do live apart [mostly . Until they join the main gang] but they visit each other frequently . And years later when theyre both 27 is when the story starts .

-her goggles have a bow sown onto either side of them . She invented that . Some people think its stupid but she thinks it looks cute [i agree nina o7]

-around 5'3 to 5'4 . Insane height difference with heath LOL

-other than alchemy and inventing stuff, her other hobby is collecting or sometimes making and planning out ornate teacups!!

-she actually tends to snap quite a bit . I mean she always tries to be polite about it but she has Anger . Yk . She can also go a bit insane when handed crossbows or any type of medieval firearm .

HEATH:

-shes a travelling merchant and a famous author

-the place shes from is basically just Desert Furry Town . Shes a fox furry with sand/ground magic [making pillars from the ground, summoning sandstorms when theres sand around, manipulating rocks and dirt etc etc]

-27, he/she, transfem lesbian . Dating nina .

-bpd [maybe inattentive type adhd too]

-she has a pet starfox!! [fox with cosmic powers] his names astra and hes pretty important to the story!! [we love astra here]

-heath is chill . Very very tired . Really nice and friendly, being a merchant and all . But just really apathetic . She also uses a large vocabulary since shes an author . While she is level headed shes very open to her fair share of bits, sarcastic quips and teasing people . Or bullying doc LMAO . As a child she was quite literally the opposite of this though . She was excitable and energetic and had her head in the clouds, always dreaming up a story . Her parents were neglectful and hated her [they were on the brink of a divorce and thought he was a burden on them] . This caused heaths happiness to largely mellow out over the years . this was paired with the fact that she largely had no friends, until she met nine . But im not re-explaining allat again . Under her parents demand she became a merchant and did, indeed enjoy it . Meeting new people across lands was actually fun, shes kind of like those bartenders that know everyones secrets . She also pursued her dream of writing which went extremely well . However she always faced a lot of slack for her identity over the years . At first it was being too hyperactive, but now it was even more personal . People were uncomfortable with her since shes trans openly so, whilst also not fitting any female gender norms [stubble, flat chest, broad shoulders, fem-ish but deep voice] . As a result people who dont know her tend to be disgusted of her or scared of her and treat her like an alien . Heath tries not to let that bother her but it very much does [as seen in her breakdown in arc 1] . This is paired with her overworking herself constantly to be the perfect writer so that people care more about that than how she presents [and thus leave him the fuck alone] . Shes grown to be apathetic as a coping mechanism, and it comes to her detriment quite a lot . She doesnt think nor feels like she belongs anywhere, and it took her a while to not constantly other herself from her friends . Her awful sleep schedule also just makes her kind of cranky but she supresses it . Of course, she has a deep love and care for nina, someone who understood her and never judged him for anything . This is also why she argues and bickers with doc so much, since shes so apathetic and worried about herself as a person [not out of a big ego but out of anxiety] while doc tries to focus constantly only on work, thinking its the only thing that matters . Doc ia also just more stuck up than heath althought theyre just as tired as each other .

-shes your local testosterone and estrogen dealer . Well not literally since you transition through potions and stuff here but she does sell them

-she travels the world to find inspiration to write about and pick up nicknacks to sell . Shes very good at negotiating and bargaining .

-mf is like 5'11 to 6'0 . She constantly has to bend down when theyre checking the map together LOL

-she loves gardening, especially growing tea!! Shes a bit addicted to it too i fear

-heath loves scheming and making Evil [/silly] plans with rinu . Stupid fucking goobers/pos
