The stumbling sounds from the hall had caught her attention, but only just so. It was strange to hear where she lived, but she wasn’t bothered enough to look. Maybe a drunk party guest from a neighbor.

But then there was a rattling at her door. She sat up straight and her dogs started growling. Without wasting a second, she grabbed a handgun and knife and waited near the door, her back to a wall. She would let the intruder come in to meet a nasty surprise, she thought.

The door opened and a shirtless man with a big red hat came in. And in less than a heartbeat, there was a knife being plunged into his shoulder and a gun held to his chin as he was shoved back against a wall. “Who are you?!”
