Happy Heavenly Belated Birthday 🤎
Is there a book or a piece of art that holds a special place or meaning in your life? (Even if it's quirky or inexplicable)
Thanks for asking!!!
If the made-for-television movie Selena (dir. Gregory Nava, 1997) starring Jennifer Lopez is on, I'm watching it. I think I've seen it four or five times. I was not/am not a fan of Selena (though clearly she was a big talent); I am neutral on Jennifer Lopez (also a big talent); I am decidedly not a fan of Tejano music (definitely in the category of "they didn't make it for me"). But for some reason, that film is really compelling even though it's a TV movie and it shows. TV movies are not really movies, as we all know. And I'm kind of a movie snob, so none of this makes sense in any way, shape, or form.
Selena fanart! Hope I did her justice!

Selena Quintanilla: A Timeless Legacy That Still Inspires
Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, known simply as Selena, was an icon who became a symbol of strength, determination, and passion for music and culture. Her story is one of resilience, and her influence transcends beyond her untimely death, leaving a mark on not only the Latin community but the music world as a whole.
Born on April 16, 1971, Selena was raised in a family that valued music and community. Her father, Abraham Quintanilla Jr., recognized her raw talent at an early age and supported her dreams, guiding her through years of small performances before the world discovered her. Selena's rise to fame in the Tejano music scene came after her debut album, and her 1994 album Amor Prohibido cemented her place as the "Queen of Tejano" music. Her infectious energy, melodic voice, and vibrant personality won over fans of all backgrounds, making her one of the most influential Latin artists of the '90s.
Though she was deeply immersed in the world of music, Selena also pursued a passion for fashion. The opening of Selena Etc. was not just a business venture—it was a reflection of her dreams and entrepreneurial spirit. She loved connecting with her fans through fashion and wanted to share that part of herself. Selena was a fashion-forward role model for many young women, inspiring them to embrace their individuality and feel beautiful in their own skin.
The tragic day of March 31, 1995, when Selena was taken from us, left the world in shock. She was only 23 years old. Yet, her legacy has only grown stronger. Despite her short life, Selena’s music, beauty, and soul continue to captivate hearts worldwide. Her albums remain timeless classics, her songs continue to be played in clubs and homes, and her story is celebrated through films, documentaries, and tributes.
Even 30 years after her passing, Selena’s influence is undeniable. The Selena Quintanilla Foundation, dedicated to her memory, and her music are still celebrated by fans of all generations. Her posthumous crossover success, including the 1997 album Dreaming of You and tracks like "I Could Fall in Love," only solidified her place as a cultural and musical legend. Her enduring appeal is evident in the way she has become an icon of empowerment, especially within the Latin community, and how her music continues to resonate with people from all walks of life.
Selena’s impact goes beyond music; she remains a beacon of hope and inspiration for people striving to overcome obstacles and follow their passions. From her humble beginnings to her meteoric rise to fame, Selena's story reflects the true spirit of the American Dream—one that continues to inspire new generations to break barriers, chase their dreams, and never give up. Her music, her legacy, and her love for her fans will never fade. Selena will always be missed, but her memory and her influence will live on forever.
Her family, especially her father Abraham and her brother A.B., continue to honor her through the Quintanilla Family Foundation and other projects that promote Latin music and culture. Selena’s fans keep her alive with tributes, such as the annual “Selena Day” celebrations in her hometown of Corpus Christi, Texas, where her presence is still felt deeply. Selena is not just a memory; she’s a living, breathing part of the music movement and continues to shape the future of music and pop culture.
