Promoter of free speech, obscenely-generous donor to Planned Parenthood, advocate for women's rights, employer with incredible employee benefits (supposedly), champion of the arts, legendary film preservation supporter, and the guy primarily responsible for the pictured issue...which rocked my world in more ways than just the obvious one. Say what you want about Hef's promotion of "toxic masculinity", "unhealthy body images", etc. And say what you want about the Centerfold in this particular issue in question...but she changed my life. She was the first "fantasy" girl I ever saw who, in my opinion, did not resemble a Barbie Doll. Sure, her surgically-enhanced bosom certainly aspired to one facet of Barbie's fantastical and unrealistic proportions. But Anna Nicole Smith, to me, looked like many women I knew and saw on a daily basis. She had curves. And the magazine embraced and promoted them. And THAT really changed my perception of women and what society deemed I should find attractive. And for that, I thank you, Hef. He was a complicated figure, to be sure. And even though some of us might not agree with the way he lived or some of the choices he made, there's no denying his impact on our culture and society. And for that, I salute and thank him and bid him a fond farewell. #riphugh (And you can rake me over the coals in your mind all you want- some notable feminists in my life surely will - But I would hope that if you're going to comment on this that you at least keep the discussion civil and polite- since it's my f**king page. Thanks.)
