“Why did we have to take your car?” Alex asked, looking at the smoke billowing out from the engine of Liz’s 2004 Ford Focus, his nose wrinkled. Liz groaned. Normally she’d defend poor Spike. Since she’d bought it off Rosa all those years ago, it had taken her from coast to coast, all over the southwest, and up and down California. She’d been reminding her best friends of that for years. But now it was impossible to mount a real defense, considering. “At least we got through the mountains!” she protested, and it sounded weak to her own ears. She should have listened to Arturo and had the car looked over before they left. But she was so sure nothing would happen.  Liz supposed she should just thank San Cristobal that they weren’t up on a twisty mountain road when her car had turned into an overpriced paperweight in the middle of Arizona.
