Alternative magickal frameworks from the traditional 5-element pentagram
Full explanation, correspondences and ko-fi below 👇
Background
I’m a Lenormand reader but also a novelist. The last few years I’ve become a total devotee of a story structure framework called the Plot Embryo, which is based on Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey, distilled into eight points. (Recommend this free video course if you’re interested in learning it.)
The Plot Embryo structure works because it’s based on real life cycles, and the process of entering unfamiliar situations and learning from them - I’ve always known the structure went far beyond just storytelling.
For one thing, without labels, the circle of eight sections is identical to the Wheel of the Year.
Tarot Readers have used the Hero’s Journey as a framework in divination, the major arcana mapping out a kind of journey around the wheel, various cards representing different stages in a journey not from birth to death, but from ignorance (the Fool) to enlightenment (the World).
🌒 The Shadow Work Journey
The Plot Embryo structure is really a shadow journey.
At it’s core, it’s the process of a person shedding a limiting or false belief, and internalising an enlightened one, and showing the effects of that change on their life and situation.
So, the Star of Eight becomes a map of sorts, of the basic structure of a shadow journey.
This becomes useful for helping to pinpoint at which stage in our journey we’re at, and identifying ways to move forward if that’s what we want.
⚔️ Lenormand ‘Major Arcana’ and the Hero’s Journey
I noticed that the House and Ship Lenormand cards matched up almost perfectly with the ‘familiar and unfamiliar realms’ of the Plot Embryo, and set about assigning other cards to the positions.
I found a place for every card, but picked the strongest associations to create a kind of ‘Major Arcana’ for the Lenormand. I’m going to experiment with these associations while reading in future.
🌟 The Star of Eight
Stars have always been magical shapes to me. I love a pentagram as much as the next person, but the five-element framework the pentagram suggests has never clicked with me.
The circle divided into eight is a cycle I have a deep connection with from using the Plot Embryo, and one I’ve seen in countless other places (including the wheel of the year).
So I thought about forming an eight-pointed star, with relevant concepts and associations, to use as a general magickal symbol and potentially as a crystal grid etc.
So I drew out an eight pointed star, this time adding as well as the plot point associations...

I’ll probably post more as I put it into practise.
Midweek bullet journal spread I actually love 😌💕 Theme: pastel trash urban witch (me lol) Week bar on the left probably filled with doodles or Lenormand card of the week.
This is a simple little charm I use to enchant my morning coffee to help me defeat the day, be productive and kick ass.
YOU’LL NEED:
☕️ a beverage
💎a crystal connected to your goal for the day (I use blue goldstone or substitute my mini blue glitter jar for creativity)
DO THE CHARM
⚪️ set the crystal down next to the cup to charge the brew
⚪️ pour or stir clockwise while brewing to attract productive energies
⚪️ repeat an incantation a few times while brewing. This is mine:
“I am a writer & I am done fucking around. I am a writer & I get shit done.”
⚪️ make sure the incantation is short, simple, and makes you feel like a badass (this is why so many of mine include swearing). It could just be “Today I’m going to [goal or task] and I’m done fucking around.”
⚪️ that’s it! drink up and have a productive day.
TAKEAWAY TWEAKS for when you’re buying rather than brewing.
⚪️ slip the crystal under the edge of the saucer
⚪️ or hold the crystal in your hand under the take away cup
⚪️ if there’s a place to stir, do. You can run your finger clockwise around the rim, or skip it altogether.
⚪️ say the incantation under your breath (if it’s noisy) or in your head (if it’s quiet)
