the songs are. well, they’re definitely strong. haknyeon had been curious as to what kind of concept they’d go for; sure he’d gotten an idea about it when they gave the members a short brief on what to expect, but listening to the songs presented to him, he can definitely tell that they’re going for a stronger concept.
there’s a distinct sound to both songs that immediately catches your attention and he finds himself nodding his head along to the songs as they’re presented to them. instinctively, his shoulders are moving on their own and his brows are furrowed as he focuses. this is it, he thinks. this is what they’ll be greeting the public with.
and then they’re shown the choreographies and lines and it’s starting to feel realer than ever. nova is nova for a reason and haknyeon realizes that as he watches the choreography. sure, he’d like to think of himself as a pretty decent dancer but the dance that they’d been given most definitely isn’t easy, if anything it’s the exact opposite. it’s challenging but in a way that has haknyeon excited.
they’re told that they’d have to present this to hyunbin by the end of the month and haknyeon’s filled with all kinds of reactions, all sorts of feelings. he doesn’t have time to rest anymore; and he tries to take it with stride. this is what he’s always wanted. debut.
treasure
among the two songs with choreography presented to them, treasure was decided to be the debut song. haknyeon finds himself spending hours trying to perfect the choreography, every angle he intends to get exactly right, as he memorizes the steps.
he’s given a good amount of lines and he wants to make sure that he’s able to perfect them too. haknyeon’s practice style has always involved pieces of paper and a pen.
on the paper are his lines, scribbled with notes and ticks here and there for him to work on. he underlines some words that he thinks he needs to emphasize on, and circles words to write notes on like “intense!!!” and “leg!!!”.
it’s a strong song with a tough choreography, definitely something he thinks is nova-like as well. over and over again, he goes through the choreography, over and over again, he goes through his lines.
they’re told to start dorming together, that they’re no longer allowed to go to seocho to practice and are to focus at the nova building instead. it’s understandable, but it gets haknyeon a little further away from other people (further away from juyeon).
but he needs to focus, and the only thing on his mind is debut, debut, debut. it’s harder to keep in contact with people, though his mother does call him from time to time.
it’s not far fetched to say that nova’s become his second home. that he spends more time at the nova building than anywhere else.
as he’s practicing, he realizes that the mirror becomes fogged with sweat and for some reason that makes him proud. he lets out a loud huff after a second of rest before he walks towards the speakers again.
jaehyun would’ve never seen this kind of evaluation coming. sure he’s aware that variety’s important and perhaps the best way to get your name out there, but he never would’ve thought that they’d have a whole evaluation dedicated to it.
he’d simply thought that they’d wanted the trainees to learn choreo of their seniors for another reason. he looks at juyeon, standing beside him and casually puts an arm around him. it’s always nice having someone of similar height around. and being the same age was pretty cool too.
“they’ve always got some kind of way to surprise us,” he sighs. “and some acting thing too?” he continues. “did you pick a scene?” he asks, turning to juyeon.
this evaluation gets worse and worse the more he thinks about it. well, not worse-- but stressful. there's so much to consider, so much to focus on. yoongi feels himself likely to be stretched thin throughout the rest of the month. he doesn't know the first thing of trying to be funny, or acting or anything of the like. "improv..." he mumbles to himself, teeth worrying his lower lip as he rakes a hand through his hair.
it's a pretty simple concept. you're give a scene, and you act upon it. you go with the flow and think of things on the spot. yoongi understands that, gets it-- but he knows he's gonna choke at some point, even if everyone makes it seem so easy.
"you think they're gonna make us do somethin' too?" he mumbles, leaning over to juyeon a bit to be heard. his lips purse as he gathers his thoughts, tongue clicking against the roof of his mouth as he grumbles. "ah...i can't improv for shit."
seonho hasn’t actually watched many episodes of running man. his parents had never really allowed him to divulge in these past times and when he was allowed to watch things he preferred watching disney movies or other cartoons. so when the final task of the month was announced, he had been taken a bit off guard by what is was. but well. tag is a game he has played before--once, in school--and the basics of it are easy to understand. don’t let anyone take off his name tag. easy enough.
his tactic is to just be sprinting around the royal building and avoiding anyone he can if he happens to see them. he comes skidding around a corner and just happens to fun into someone as he does. “ack--hyung!” quick to back up and put space to them, seonho eyes the older male in suspicion. “....are you a good guy or a bad guy.”
haknyeon’s a new kid in seoul, so naturally, everything catches his attention. even the part-timer at the convenience store near his school (and no, he does NOT have a crush on him).
there’s a bunch of convenience stores lined up across the side of the street near his school. which is great for haknyeon, really. it meant good food, good prices and lots of snacks. something that basically any growing boy would need. seoul is still new to him so it’s no surprise that haknyeon finds himself kind of lost on his way back home during his first week in school.
he stands in the middle of the pavement, lost and staring down at his map application. turn right? turn left? what did any of this mean? he purses his lips and finally pulls his eyes away from the screen only to catch sight of someone in one of the convenience stores. it’s a boy. older than him. much taller than him. with black hair and sharp features. and he’s not too sure why, but he can’t stop staring. standing outside the store, his eyes follow the worker from outside the window as he blinks. wow, he thinks. is everyone in seoul that good looking?
he’s snapped out of his daze when his phone rings though and he picks it up, only to have a very worried aunt almost yelling at him from the other line. “are you lost?! didn’t i tell you to call me if you’re lost? joo haknyeon!”
with a sigh, he begins to walk straight ahead, listening to his aunt’s loud voice boom through the speaker of his phone.
...
“there’s a pc bang nearby! let’s go there before it gets packed with other kids,” his friend says, wrapping an arm around haknyeon’s shoulder. haknyeon laughs as he tries to shake his friend’s grip off him, though as he shifts around, he spots the boy again. there’s a window dividing them once more and just like before, haknyeon pauses for a moment his eyes following the tall stranger. oh, he’s probably working today too.
“joo haknyeon! earth to joo haknyeon!” his friend says before he shakes haknyeon. “what are you looking at?” he peers over haknyeon’s shoulder before he lets out a loud oh! “you’re hungry aren’t you?” his friend asks teasingly. “they serve food at pc bangs you jeju kid. come on let’s go!”
haknyeon doesn’t put up much of a fight, simply lets the thought of the convenience store boy falter from his mind before he skips to the pc bang.
...
it’s not like he takes that route on purpose. more like he does so because it’s en route home and his friends like walking along that path. so more often than not he spots the boy there. haknyeon can’t really find the right words to describe him. he’s definitely good looking but there’s something else about him that catches haknyeon’s attention.
his friends are loud as usual as they make jokes but they never actually go inside that particular convenience store. haknyeon kind of wants to though; just out of curiosity. he simply wants a change of atmosphere. that’s all. that’s all there is to it really.
...
“do we have to? but why? we always go to the one just a few blocks from here!” his friend whines.
“yeah! plus the noona there already knows us. she sometimes slips in free treats for us,” his other friend chimes in.
“are you guys dogs?” haknyeon turns to his friends, making a face. “this one is closer to school! there are so many stores here, we can’t just limit ourselves to one or two stores, right?” he tries to make an argument, but he knows he sounds silly.
“i know why you really want to go there,” his friend says as he raises a brow at haknyeon. “you’re crushing on that part-timer there. come on, you can’t fool me. i see you making googly eyes at him all the time and shit. you’re so easy to read!”
haknyeon practically chokes on his own spit at this. him? crushing on whoever that part-timer was? he didn’t even know his name! impossible!
“you’re crazy!” he replies, eyes wide. “you know i like that girl from the class beside us! don’t go spouting nonsense man,” he shakes his head before sighing. “i just think it’d be nice to spice things up! go to a new store and all!”
his three friends eye each other before they finally give in to haknyeon’s idea, convinced.
they enter the store and haknyeon sneaks a glance (a glance!!!) at the part-timer. he squints in an attempt to read the name tag but the only thing he can read before his friend cries out with a loud “woah! they have the spicy chicken ramen here!” is ju.
he picks out ramen and a corndog for himself before he walks towards the counter to pay. juyeon the name reads. he looks at the stranger’s face before he confirms what he’d thought he already knew. he was really damn handsome. it wasn’t fair.
as he walks towards his friends, the sauce from the corndog spills onto his uniform and he frowns, pouting his lips. he could just grab a napkin to dab at the sauce, or he could just eat his corndog. he chooses the latter.
( “so are you glad that you got to see that cute part-timer, lover boy?” his friend teases.
“shut up man. i’m worried about my uniform now. my aunt is going to be so mad.” )
...
eggs. haknyeon needs eggs. he’s going to egg a school. particularly, hyunjoon’s school. he’s going to egg some school, some kids and probably their houses too. he needs eggs. when hyunjoon had told him about the problems he’d been facing haknyeon had gotten mad, red in the face. he’d never been so angry before.
he’d skipped class, decided that it wasn’t important enough for him to go to. not when he’s got other more important things to do. storming into the convenience store he marches to where the eggs are.
he grabs one carton, and then two and then three. and then realizes that he can’t carry all of them in one go before he places them on the counter. “wait,” he says, before he walks back towards the eggs and grabs another two more cartons. he’s heated and angry and he can’t wait to make those other boys suffer for what they’d done to hyunjoon.
he doesn’t even realize who the cashier is until he pulls out some cash to pay. it’s the tall, sort of good looking (very good looking) boy he’d seen before. and for some reason, haknyeon feels like he owes an explanation. he’s buying five cartons of eggs in the middle of the day when he should be in class. he probably should give some sort of explanation. “i’m planning to egg some kids. they made fun of my friend,” he says. real smooth, haknyeon thinks. he’s probably going to think you’re some weird kid now.
“can i join?” the boy’s reply catches haknyeon off guard. he blinks and furrows his brows before he actually, really looks up to take a good look at the stranger (or maybe he’s not really so much a stranger anymore).
“what?”
“let me egg them with you.”
and for the first time that day, haknyeon breaks out into soft laughter.
the whole of entirety of supernova project had been a one of a kind experience; something that haknyeon was still reeling in from. after all, he’d spent three months away, stuck in a building and spending most, if not all, of his time with his other fellow nova trainees. and while he got along with all of them and cared about them dearly, it was nice to finally be able to get out and well, see things again.
he’s skipping through the seocho halls, humming a song under his breath as he makes his way to the cafeteria to grab something quick before he spots a familiar figure. immediately he stops in his tracks. and while he probably would’ve just assumed that the person in question had snuck into the seocho building to see him, he’d been through this enough times (hyunjoon and hyojeong) to know that nope, this was definitely not a sneaking in situation.
“hyung?” he says, in shock. he blinks his eyes a few times in disbelief before a smile immediately graces his face. he doesn’t think twice as his steps quicken and he almost jumps into juyeon’s arm for a hug. “hyung!” he beams. “hyung, juyeon hyung!” he repeats the words. “what!” his smile is bright and eyes wide.
