I think most of us are aware of the way conservatives and reactionaries use "won't somebody please think of the children?" rhetoric, but I think a lot of us have got to be a lot more aware of its sibling, "won't somebody please think of the women?"

Like, during the recovered memory fad, recovered memory therapy was treated as this way to empower women and help them heal from severe abuses. In reality, there were a lot of women being gaslit by their therapists into believing they suffered abuse that they had literally no memory of before entering therapy, which could have a devastating toll on their mental health.

Therapists cried, "won't somebody please think of the women?" while refusing to trust said women to know their own lives and their own family members. They weren't being empowered. They weren't being protected. They were being exploited by therapists who got to cash big paychecks after gaslighting and psychologically torturing them.

White patriarchy frames white women as delicate flowers under constant threat, and the recovered memory fad absolutely played into that.

Before the Satanic Panic normalized so-called recovered memory therapy, "won't somebody please think of the women?" has been used to justify anti-Black racism ever since anti-Black racism was a thing. Black men were (and still are, according to some people) supposedly this massive threat to white women. This not only justified anti-Black violence and oppression in their minds, but it also justified treating white women as their own personal property.

So yeah, we always need to be critical and ask ourselves, "Is this actually feminism, or is this another case of 'won't somebody please think of the (fragile, delicate, and helpless) women'?"
