Why We Love It:

One thing this fandom seems to agree on is the importance and need for friendships for our beloved characters. This author has done an extraordinary job of coming up with a completely original character who manages to become instantly likeable and interesting. She and Michael play off each other so well and it makes sense how they become friends so easily. While time restraints for the show make it hard, this fic is a perfect example of why Michael (and the other characters) need friends outside of the core group. It’s wonderful to read and it’s completely believable to see Michael thriving in this friendship that’s his very own. It’s lovely to watch them be there for each other, joke around with each other, and to root for the other to succeed. It’s always a pure delight to leave a fic with a new character to love, and this fic will be no different.

During all their years spent apart, they both had things that made them think of home. A month into their new relationship, Michael takes Alex for a ride out to the desert to show him one.

Why We Love It:

Often times we imagine what those lost 10 years between Michael and Alex looked like. This fic gives us a peek inside as Malex begins a new chapter of their relationship. The author captures hidden memories and special keepsakes over the course of time. It fills you with love and hope as Malex moves towards their future, while nodding at the past. This fic goes to show you that some loves can last a lifetime.

Ladies of RNM Week 2020 Floral Watercolours

Why We Love It:

One of the highlights of the recent @ladiesofrnm​ event was this gorgeous series of watercolours featuring each of our favourite women, including many supporting characters like Nora, Mimi and Charlie. Each piece features these ladies in signature accessories or outfits, but the highlight by far is the corresponding flower choice for each character, all chosen so thoughtfully to reflect their individual strengths and/or journeys. They are all beautiful in their own right, but some of our personal favourites are Rosa, Isobel, Charlie and Helena.

Why We Love It:

Michael Guerin’s character on the show is a complex one - a good man forced to live through trauma and working towards happiness. This piece perfectly captures that complexity of Michael’s life; his desire and ability to be great, to be happy, but the shackles of suffering, and arrows of trauma keeping him from achieving goal. The artist shows bright colors of Michael’s wings shining ahead of a dark and story sky as the perfect juxtaposition. Michael Guerin has the heart of a good man, but he lives in a bad world.

Fic: We both carry a switchblade in our sleeves Author: @soberqueerinthewild​ Characters/Pairings: Isobel Evans & Alex Manes  Recommended by: acomebackstory Review: I believe this was the first Isobel & Alex fic I ever read and it remains one of my favourites (and I swear I’m not just saying that because the author said it was partially inspired by my venting about the lack of Isobel content in the fandom). I’m always a sucker for an Isobel POV, and I love using something as physical and aggressive as self-defence to work through her trauma, anger and sleeping problems post-S1. The author does a stellar job slowly building the trust between these two very closed-off characters in a way that feels natural to their canonical characterization. An absolute must-read for anyone holding out hope for this onscreen friendship!

Fic: Do You Know Who I Think I Am? Author: @piccolina-mina​ Characters/Pairings: Rosa Ortecho & Alex Manes Recommended by: acomebackstory Review: I imagine there could be a really special connection between Rosa and Alex, and this short but sweet fic brings that to life perfectly. The dialogue between them as they take a drive to the desert is as sharp and teasing as you would expect between these two and it touches on tough topics like the afterlife, addiction, and Alex’s lingering war wounds. The camaraderie feels easy and lived in, despite the decade lost, and I feel like so much of their dynamic could easily slot into canon. Exploring Rosa’s perspective on life after resurrection and what became of her loved o nes while she was locked away in that pod is one of my favourite fic topics, and I love the way it is explored here.

Fic: the moon climbs high over the dead oak tree [tumblr] Author: @michaels-blackhat​ Characters/Pairings: Maria DeLuca & Michael Guerin Recommended by: spaceskam Review: I say this is a Maria & Michael gen fic, but it could very easily be a Maria & Everyone fic or just a Maria fic--it sorta depends on how you look at it. Which is basically how Maria feels in this fic. It’s a horror-ish story of Maria constantly being drawn to an allegedly haunted house. She keeps going back because her mind keeps telling her to even though she knows better and she’s told to stay away. Christi just went and knocked it out of the park with this one and every time I am flabbergasted at how few notes it has. I couldn’t recommend this more.

Fic:  whom the fates have mark’d Author: @islndgurl777​ Characters/Pairings: Human Squad & Pod Squad Recommended by:  lire-casander Review: This is a two-fic arc revolving around the Japanese concept of red strings attaching two people destined to be together, but with a wonderful twist! There is a string for friendship, a string for love, and special strings for those who are different. This storyline, written from Maria’s POV, gives us a perfect insight on how her psychic side shaped her into who she is in canon, and brings us on a journey to discover much more about the rest of the characters than what the reader could have expected. Even if it veers on AU territory, it’s still an amazing way to dive into well-built characters that ring true to canon!

Fic: Spice Up Your Life Author: @piccolina-mina​ Characters/Pairings: Maria DeLuca & Rosa Ortecho & Liz Ortecho Recommended by: lire-casander Review: There are really very few stories picturing teenage!Maria, teenage!Liz and teenage!Rosa being just girls, showing their friendship and their banter. This is one of them: a short but powerful ficlet about three girls before the world got to them. It has everything in less than a thousand words: Liz being the baby girl, Rosa being the snarkiest of them all, and Maria being the activist - strong, stubborn but sweet and supportive. I could picture them all in my head, I could hear their voices and see them interacting while getting dressed up for Halloween. A must read!

Fic: Any other Rose Author: @haloud​ Characters/Pairings: Alex Manes & Manes brothers Recommended by: i-never-look-away Review: I still think about this fic months after it was written, for me that's always a great sign of the impact of a story. This fic is a must read for anyone who loves Alex and wishes and hopes that at least one of his family members manages to not be the worst. Alex and an estranged brother have a long overdue talk that is just very cathartic to read. There's also a couple of stab me in the heart with these feelings moments that I believe anyone who's an Alex fan will love and appreciate.

Seriously, I love it more than I can accurately describe. Michael’s mindset and his inability to keep track of things and just... everything. It takes sick!fic to a whole new level. I couldn’t recommend it more.

I then wanted to read the fics, see all the graphics/artwork, and yes, watch the beautiful videos that these talented creators have brought to us. Katie is so talented! Every single video she creates gives me all the feels and I usually cry every time I watch. This is my favorite video of hers. I remember after seeing it for the first time, I watched it over-and-over again. The edits combined with this beautiful song (Repeat Until Death by Novo Amor) = something truly COSMIC. Please go watch her creations; you won’t be disappointed. Thank you, @isakvaltersnake​! 

Work: In a Cold World, It’s a Warm Place Rating: G Author: @craashdowns​ Character/Pairing: Michael Guerin/Maria DeLuca Recommended by: @lire-casander​ Review: Sometimes you stumble upon little gems on your dashboard that make you fall in love with them upon the first read. This AU is one of them, a story about the people we find home with. It has a poetic essence that captured me and never let me go. It’s probably my favorite story for this pairing, since it has everything I love in them: their characterization is perfect, Michael is a musician and Maria plays hard to get, and I would quote the whole fic to the author.

The Alex and Kyle scenes were some of my favorite on the show so far. I love the dynamic that they have. And then when we got Michael added to the mix, it just made for an amazing teamup. This art is such a wonderful play on the 3 of them and the adventures they probably will have. Looks like Michael had to be the rational one this time, I could honestly see all of them of them taking turns in each position at some point. I also really love Kyle's response and that he's somewhat hiding behind Alex. That's actually a really smart idea Kyle!

Work: When We Were Young Series Rating: T/M Author: Obsessivecompulsivereadr Character/Pairing: Michael Guerin/Maria Deluca, Michael Guerin/Alex Manes Recommended by: @insidious-intent​ Review: This was the first series I read after the finale, where I felt like I could breathe. The first work in the series was the first time I could read character conversations without feeling like characters voices were written in the right age and with the level of emotional complexity the show had implied. Alex’s emotional turmoil, Maria’s strength, and Michael’s spiral are so vividly painted that it resonates immediately and permanently. I have gone back to this series over and over again, and it remains one of my favorites.

Monkey brain turns on and I just sit there like “Pretty😍”. So that’s what I say today. Pretty😍. Big talent. God bless. *Chefs kiss* PINK. 10/10 would stare at again.

Daniela captures this moment, one of my favorite Malex moments, so perfectly. I love the way Michael is staring at Alex, while his eyes are closed. You can feel the sense of peace between them as if they’ve been waiting for this moment for over a decade. I love how the characters are in black and white, while there’s the beautiful bright colors behind them. The whole thing is cosmic and I cannot wait to see more.

I love all the different Isobels and even though it’s very cute I’m also getting all the feels from her! I’m in love with the little Alex, Kyle, Michael trio looking concerned. The coloring and characters are spot on and I LOVE IT!

Art: I’m an influencer...like badgal riri Artist: @viaomens  Characters/Pairings: Isobel Evans Recommended by: @insidious-intent​ Review: I love how vibrant this piece is, and it almost looks like Isobel will climb out of the screen to critique all my fashion faux pas. The artist’s choice of vibrant colors surrounding a demure looking Isobel is the best kind of contradiction - like Isobel herself, who is soft yet full of fire.

Art: Alex with Buffy Manes Artist: @djchika​ Characters/Pairings: Alex Manes, Buffy Manes, Michael Guerin Recommended by: @insidious-intent​ Review: Buffy’s casting obviously captured the fandom’s heart, and the artist has poured that adorable feeling into this piece. Buffy surrounded by both Alex and Michael is one of the few happy things to look forward to, and this work takes that feeling and maneuvers it into this lovely little set.
