Top Horror Novels I read in 2025 (part 1)

The Buffalo Hunter Hunter Stephen Graham Jones (2025) we follow the story of Good Stab as he wrestles with his identity and the destruction of his homeland during the time of the buffalo hunters. includes gruesome death and the most interesting take on a vampire story I have ever read. I'll think about this book forever. Five (5) stars.

The Devils Joe Abercrombie (2025) INCREDIBLE ensemble story. here we follow a band of "devils" made up of unrepentant murderers, practitioners of ghastly magic, and outright monsters, and the mission he is tasked with will require bloody measures from them all in order to achieve its righteous ends. Five (5) stars).

The Corruption of Hollis Brown K Ancrum (2025) After unknowingly making a deal at the crossroads, Hollis finds himself losing control of his body and mind, falling victim to possession. Walt, the ghost making a home inside him, has a deep and violent history rooted in the town Hollis grew up in and he has unfinished business to take care of. Somehow a young adult queer horror about looking inside yourself for someone else (who is also possessing you). Five (5) stars.

Blood Slaves Markus Redmond (2025) In the Province of Carolina, 1710. Rafazi is the lone survivor of the Ramanga, an African vampire tribe rendered nearly extinct by plague. Rafazi decides to take over the plantation he is enslaved at by converting Willie into a vampire and starting an uprising. Both horrifying and satisfying use of violence in this story. Five (5) stars.

Road of Bones Christopher Golden (2022) Supernatural thriller set in Siberia, where a film crew is covering an elusive ghost story about the Kolyma Highway, a road built on top of the bones of gulag workers buried where they fell under the road. Chilling story. Four (4) stars.

Whump Review: The Road of Bones

Summary: After Silla's father is killed, she is left running almost blindly for her life. Kept sheltered from certain parts of the world, she ends up in the wagon belonging to a vicious mercenary crew who begrudgingly take her in.

Whump rating: 4/5

Tropes: untrained whumpee, team trains whumpee, choked into unconsciousness, severe chronic headaches, drug dependency, drug withdrawal, drug craving, hallucinations, stabbings, character death, forced drugging, turned in for money, held captive, threatened noncon, flashbacks, feeling of failure from living weapon, reveal of personal history unknown to whumpee, identity reveal, hiding from enemy forces.

Review: I'm slightly biased, because this book covered some of my all-time favorite tropes and I found it quite enjoyable. Set in a magical Viking-inspired story, the book does a great job of exploring addiction and several whumpy events happening to a naive whumpee. I also just generally really liked how the author explored the emotions the characters had!

Road of Bones by Christopher Golden

The concept of this book reminded me of a show I watched with Ewan McGregor, where he travelled the Road of Bones on a motorcycle. However, the similarities ended there. This story was also reminiscent of Stephen King's oeuvre, because it included both horror and supernatural elements. The story follows two men who intend to travel the Road of bones in Siberia in a truck and film it. However, things go horribly wrong, and this is where the supernatural elements come to play. The book was engaging, horrifying, and interesting, and taught me a lot about Russian folklore, which I did not expect. I would recommend this as a creepy intro to the genre, and would suggest that anyone read it if they want something deliciously spooky and compelling.
