Many artists have tackled The Scott Memorial. It’s tricky to do. This is my colourful representation of this iconic Cardiff landmark I’m delighted to share with you. Many refer to this monument as the ‘lighthouse’ or ‘clocktower’. But when I studied this monument for painting, I learned so much. For example, the land for Roath Park was donated to the city of Cardiff in 1887 by the Marquis of Bute. The park was officially opened to the public in 1894, after creating a picturesque lake from an area of marshland. In 1915, the Scott Memorial was constructed to commemorate Captain Scott's ill-fated voyage to the Antarctic from Cardiff Bay in 1910. A replica of his ship, the Terra Nova, is proudly placed above the clock dome. But you’ll have to look for it! The atmosphere of Roath Park today still retains the Victorian elegance and its status as a conservation area, which hopefully ensures these qualities will be conserved for future generations. Fond memories of my first love and I going boating. Today, I still find the lake is a delight to walk around on warm summer evenings. From an artistic point of view, many parts of the lake are an artist’s delight. The many species of trees. The reflections of the waters. The wildlife. People enjoying relaxing times. Kids creating their own memories. Roth Park. Very inspirational always.
