LOCAL BAND OF THE WEEK Witch Mountain LOCATION: Portland/Salem, OR GENRE: Doom Metal, Blues FOR FANS OF: Saint Vitus, Cathedral, The Obsessed, Witchfinder General, Mourn, Black Sabbath
DOOMSDAY TUESDAY: Beekeeper by Witch Mountain - You have not been receiving your daily recommended dose of doom, so we are here to correct this deficiency. While some might derisively call this Vest Metal (LOL), I think Witch Mountain simply lays down some massively heavy tracks. Having been dormant for a decade, they came roaring back last year featuring Uta Plotkin on vocals with one of the better metal albums of 2011.
They are at it again with Cauldron of the Wild released earlier this year. It is all doomy goodness and Rob Wrong cuts some mighty nasty low end sounds and squeals from his guitar. Beekeeper is the highlight of the album, with a grinding riff action, a lurching rhythm section, and Uta's operatic voice cutting through the morass. While this may sound unpleasant, I assure you it is quite uplifting. If you need to get more Witch Mountain fix, they also have a free EP you can download.
(Note that 80's Tuesday will be back in January)
