Producer/Director William Castle teams up with writer Robb White for their 3rd of 5 collaborations.

Starring Vincent Price, Judith Evelyn, Darryl Hickman, and Patricia Cutts.

Director William Castle introduced an innovative gimmick called "Percepto!" by wiring certain theater seats with vibrating buzzers to heighten the scare factor for audiences. These buzzing seats, made from surplus airplane wing de-icers, were activated during key scenes, especially when the infamous "tingler" creature was on the loose in the theater. This thrilling addition was paired with other dramatic stunts, like hiring actors to scream and pretend to faint, enhancing the overall experience.

#the tingler #1959 #william castle #vincent price #horror film #american cinema #films i done watched #judith evelyn #patricia cutts #darryl hickman #pamela lincoln #philip coolidge #bob gunderson #robb white #von dexter #a complicated one this. not the plot which is absolute hokum (the scientific explanation for the tingler is nonsensical). but as a film its #very disjointed. there's a lot going on. price and his research into fear. also hos crumbling marriage and the relationship of his sister i #law with his protégé. and a murder mystery in a cinema that shows silent films. a lot of it is promising but then the 80 odd #minute run time means certain aspects of the story just peter out. prices wife disappears from the film in the third act with little #explanation and no closure to that story. the tingler itself could be creepy i guess except that when it moves it wobbles about in such a #way as to make it adorable. the murder plot ends confusingly and dissatisfyingly. all these are frustrating flaws that make the film #feel like a first draft. like the script just needed one good going over to tighten it up and tidy the ending #there are good things too tho. price is obviously wonderful. of interest is a scene in which he takes lsd which must surely be one of the #earliest depictions of an acid trip on film. it's hammy and ridiculous but it's pure beautiful price. then there's judith evelyn's characte #who can neither hear nor speak and runs a cinema that shows only silent films. she also displays numerous tics and traits of an ocd #it doesn't really have anything to do with the film but it's a fascinating bit of character depth and she manages to make herself both #sympathetic and independent in her few scenes. the idea of the tingler running loose during the showing of a silent film is weirdly #brilliant and probably the highlight of the film. castles gimmicks here were cinema seat with electrical buzzers to shock the viewers #something you'd absolutely never be able to do now. also the film pauses during that late silent film scene to suggest the tingler is loose #in the viewers own cinema which is a shame. it kind of kills the tension. most effective is a scene in which evelyn finds a bath full of
