Vincent Price at opening night of "The Tingler" (1959)
"The Tingler" is a movie directed by William Castle. When it was released in theaters, they used a gimmick called "Percepto!". During specific scenes in the film, hidden electric buzzers in select theater seats were activated, providing a "tingling" sensation to the audience to simulate the onscreen monster aka "The Tingler". The buzzers were small, surplus World War II airplane wing deicing motors, and the stunt was designed to involve the audience in the movie's terror.
This is what a tingler looks like.
