Anna Torv as Helen Norville in The Newsreader’s S01E03 - A White Marquis Matinee Jacket 💖🌟👸🏻
.
.
I have always loved these photos of our Anna as Helen! That shiny dusty pink wrap-around dress is iconic, as is the strength in which she carries herself as she’s walking to her doctors appointment. She is definitely walking the walk of a woman who has just been told that she might become the face of News At Six!
As I shared in my Rob post yesterday, this post is a part of my The Newsreader On Location series. When I noted that white building in the background of my Russell Street photo, I had a wild thought. Could that have been the street in which these photos of Helen that I have loved so much were taken? I was delighted when my theory was correct, as I found the exact spot on MacKenzie Street on Google Maps. Eureka! And that was a three year mystery solved!
I really enjoy the scene to follow as well. Helen is asking for a top up of her sleeping pills as she is about to jet off to Darwin to potentially land an interview with Lindy Chamberlain, and her and Dr McCormack have a little discussion about whether they believe Mrs Chamberlain was innocent or not. Truth be told, Helen is unsure, and when Dr McCormack says that he always believed she couldn’t be trusted, Helen replies, “you and half the country.” It’s a really interesting comment, as you realise just how many people were against Lindy and how impossible it was for her to receive a fair trial due to these prejudices that; very unfortunately, seeped into the legal proceedings and the result of her trial - guilty.
For fans of old Australian soap dramas, the presence of Dr McCormack was rather exciting. Helen’s doctor in Season One was played by Robert Grubb; a veteran Australian actor. In the real 1986, Robert begun his 204 episode run on the medical soap drama The Flying Doctors, playing Dr Geoff Standish from 1986 all the way through to 1992. Our new Season Three cast mate Andrew McFarlane was also on The Flying Doctors too! What a cool sneaky niche reference to the soap by casting Robert as a doctor again in The Newsreader, set in 1986, of all years! It’s the little details like this that sends my nerd brain crazy, and why I keep returning back to The Newsreader over and over again. It’s just too good!
